I'm really sorry to hear that nigel. 

FWIW, perhaps it would help by not going into this thinking it has destroyed his life.  The anxiety and depression from all that has already led to impulsive behavior with possible long term consequences, and you don't want to get caught in a vicious cycle (whether in the criminal justice system or your social/professional life) where it becomes some type of self fulfilling prophesy.

His life might become more difficult from this point forward, and some opportunities may be lost, but it's certainly not destroyed.  I wouldn't be surprised if you guys had something similar to the U.S where one pleads guilty, but it's placed under advisement.  After satisfying the terms of probation, the charges would be dropped and the case dismissed.  But even if it's not, it's not the end of the world. . .this too shall pass. (sorry to be so cliche)

You're right of course but Marc, Barr and the whole trump tribe have become so emboldened since the senate integrity collapse. That throwing in a hanging or two seems reasonable along with the resurfacing of failed international policies.
