Justincase289 0 #1 Posted May 4, 2017 I've only been in the sport about 6 months and always jumpednin old gym shoes. I see people jump in hiking boots and hi cut sneakers, some in running shoes, others in skateboarding shoes, some barefoot. What do you jump in and why? Ankle support? Ability to run it out? Slick bottom to slip/skip across water when swooping?

HeywoodJablomie 0 #3 May 5, 2017 What ever your comfortable with. Make sure they won't fly off at opening. Rubber slippers are no good.
fanya 3 #4 May 5, 2017 I have Nike running shoes, which I do fun jumping and tandems in. Cushioning for less than perfect landings, made for running and slide amazingly well.
keithbar 1 #5 May 5, 2017 If you jump boots grippy souls and speed lace hooks are a bad idea just sayingi have on occasion been accused of pulling low . My response. Naw I wasn't low I'm just such a big guy I look closer than I really am .
DougH 270 #7 May 5, 2017 Skate shoes. I used to do tandems with cross trainers. I think it partially led to my tib-fib on an otherwise decent tandem landing. Now I think it is more important to have shoes that slide better, and are less likely to catch on landing area imperfections, than to have the extra ankle support. If I want additional ankle support I wear an ankle brace."The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

timrf79 0 #9 May 5, 2017 Basketball shoes, with no catch points for lines. In order to support ankles in case I screw up my swoop-learning-landing
sunnyape 1 #10 May 5, 2017 Cheap, skateboarding style shoes with a stiff, flat sole. - The stiffness helps keep your booties taught. - The flatness makes turf surfing easier. - The cheapness makes them disposable DZ only shoes.
DHemer 0 #11 May 10, 2017 Brand name skate shoes - got to look cool at the DZ even if you have no skills - slide nicely on faster landings - fairly cushioned for when you need to run out a landing - fill up booties well

RMK 3 #13 May 10, 2017 Your shoes must also colour coordinate with your jumpsuit and gear - this hasn't been mentioned above."Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"

I've often heard the saying on Skydiving "Safety 3rd" and I find this misleading and dangerous. It should be "Matchey-matchey 3rd...saftey 4th...if there's time for it". Carry on. My progression has been impacted severely by my canopy not matching my rig. I finally got a jump suit that matches, but I have to do something about the canopy. Buy new shoes....you have to then buy a new jumpsuit and rig to go with it.My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing.... Geist 0 #17 May 10, 2017 A good ol' pair of Vans does me just fine. Red of course, to match my gear.

FlyLikeARaven 0 #19 May 12, 2017 I like my Vans too, but after jumping in old running shoes for over a year, I'm finding they don't have a lot of support. My heels hurt after a couple of decent landings. And of course, they match the rest of my gear, but now that I've started CRW, shoes that match your clothes (or even each other) is a sign of a true rookie.I'm not a lady, I'm a skydiver.
