White privilege example for this week

Hi Bill,

Re:  'Watch a child meet another child of a different race for the first time - they will stare at them, go silent, perhaps even try to touch their hair or face'

'Same thing if they have a birthmark, or are missing a limb or something'

I would argue that this is not racism.  This is a reaction to 'something' different.

I agree - but that reaction is the basis of racism (and xenophobia, and prejudice against the disabled etc.)  We all do it.  It's how we deal with that innate judgment that makes us a racist (or not.)

We are most comfortable with people like us.  If they are foreigners that manifests as xenophobia; if they are a different race we call it racism.

Yes, this is why I never have a hard time crossing from Manitoba into North Dakota. The people charged with guarding America's frontier are taught to be suspicious and to do their best to protect the nation. They do this primarily through ensuring the correct documentation is present. But the secondary methods involve very subjective judgements. I roll up to the window as a 63 year old white man with no discernable accent. And my hair is usually cut short enough that I look military. I always wear my Canadian Legion marked mask at the border. These people mostly have military backgrounds. They make small talk with me as I get processed. Only if I have a cargo that is radioactive (potash) do I get any more attention than that. And that only involves driving through a scanning machine. And that is my white privilege story.

What about Asian privilege?  The earnings from their privilege gets them 117% as much as their white male counterparts and 106% of their white female counterparts.

Are they earning more on account of a preference given them simply due to their race?

Or is there some other attribute responsible?

We KNOW that white males do not need to show any advantage in talent, education, IQ, or any other measurable attribute other than gender to earn more than white females (for example)

Your comment indicates you are in need of a clue

That's not about white privilege. That's about a racist judge who's behind schedule for a good arse kicking.

You have just described one major component of what white privilege is. A white racist judge who has not been arse kicked, removed or otherwise sanctioned is someone who white defendants will be privileged to stand in front of.

So unless you either believe he is the only white racist judge around, or that there are just as many black racist judges as white racist judges (both absurdly unlikely) then yes, this is also about white privilege in general. How could you possibly say otherwise?

You indeed need a clue. The wage gap is indeed in parts due to the fact that women more often than men have responsibilities at home. Hence, they cannot take over-time shifts and extra work, because they have a child at home that needs caring for. Or an elderly parent that needs caring for. That leads to a lower earning potential. It also leads to lower promotion potential, which leads to lower earning potential.

Do you have children? Did you share the time requirements in raising children evenly?

One job. They looked at One. Job.

Yes, which to some degree makes sense. Unionized job so rates are pre-determined. Still shows women making less than men. Why, well men take on more over-time than women. Fathers generally preferred overtime and extra shifts, mothers generally preferred time off.

This all shows one of the reasons why women make less than men: women more often than men have obligations at home.

Not even close, my wife is a pharmaceutical executive, I get the kids up, fed and off to school, then it is on to laundry, cleaning, shopping and cooking dinner and checking homework.  So not evenly.

“The gap can be explained entirely by the fact that, while having the same choice sets in the workplace, women and men make different choices.”

This is born out in multiple studies and is sometimes referred to as the “gender equality paradox”

Just give an example of white privilege in your own life.

There was that time I cracked a joke in formation during Airborne school and my Hispanic First Sergeant made me scrub the bottom two feet of the entire barracks with a toilet brush.

you can think whatever you like, but it's not.  i have some material somewhere i was using for another article that showed how racism was invented by european colonialists in the 15th century.  up until that time, folks separated by area, country, or clan.  n mention of race ever came into play, but religion came to just before that.  it may take a bit to find it, but you should be able to find something if i don't get it quickly.

See? A black man may have been given 3 feet to scrub.
