Crazy cutaway video

Putting the gun between his legs effectively ruled out any chance of kicking out the twists. I wonder if he'd got straight on that if he'd been able to kick them out before it wound up too fast. It only looks like two or three twists.
"Now, why do witches burn?"
"...because they're made of... wood?"
"Good. So how do you tell whether she is made of wood?"
"Build a bridge out of her."

does not matter - if you are going around 3-4 times, then you are already finished. Anything past that is stupid/dangerous/neglectful/over-confident/altiude-wasting/time-wasting and leads to other distractions, not solutions

he did 16+ revolutions..... that is not 'line twists'

I challenge anyone to open their parachute, leave the brakes set. get it flying straight....now release one toggle and see what happens. even 'docile' canopies will be horizontal to the ground in 2-3 revolutions and spiraling out of the skyve at a rate of 250-300' per revolution. And your eyeballs and feet will start to hurt rather quickly. this is a malfunction that needs to be dealt with immediately.

Maybe you should say, "all but the most docile...". I took the brake fire challenge. Nothing interesting happened. My "set" brakes do seem very shallow.

It took about 20 seconds to come close to making one revolution. Min vertical speed was 2 MPH going into the wind and 8 MPH going with the wind in the spin. I gave up and headed to the landing pattern.

DtHames What exactly is that software that you have? Looks interesting.

Next time I jump I will try the brake challenge. Its just one more thing that I need to learn about my canopy. I only w/l at a 1.03 but I'm curiuos to see what it does.

Some canopies of course could be different. I seem to recall that Pilot canopies have relatively shallow brake settings. I think it was a 136 or something I jumped; quite dull when I manually popped one toggle after opening. A good canopy for newbies (or working instructors who don't want drama). My Sabre 1 135 though (also at about 1.33 load) gets a nice rapid spiral going, which I think I can slow but not stop with aggressive harness turn input.

EDIT: I guess, dthames, you were using the canopy on your profile, as Pilot 210 at slightly under 1.0 load?

Yes, 210 Pilot and very lightly loaded.

Starting with data from a Flysight, I use the Excel macro from http://hellis.me/ which does several things including creating a .KML file that can be opened in GoogleEarth. The image is from viewing the data on GoogleEarth.

Perhaps the stage in which the brakefire occurs is also of influence.

I had one once on my (then) brand new Storm 190, loaded at approximately 1.1. I was spinning on my back pretty fast and already reaching for my cutaway when I looked up, expecting to see a huge ball of yarn. I was amazed to see a perfectly nice and open canopy "above" my head, so I countered the spin on my opposite rear riser and wondered what the hell was going on. Then the penny dropped, I released my brakes and flew straight once more. All this happened well above decision altitude.
