Shipping Migrants

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Re:  GOP governors put focus on migrants with Martha's Vineyard transport - POLITICO

It would seem to me that since these migrants quite possibly did not choose to be re-located, that would be considered kidnapping.  And, since they were shipped over state lines, that would make it a federal offense.

Maybe the DOJ should indict both Abbott & DeSantis.

Just putting them on buses and planes and (effectively) telling them to get out of town harkens back to the sundown towns that still existed into the 70’s. Not a good look for increasing numbers of people. It’ll backfire as Boomers die off.

OTOH, we’re pretty good about refugees here in Mass. Just in the local area near Springfield (maybe 200,000 in the area) we probably take 100+ per year that I know of. I help people move in, and sometimes fix furniture. But man, people discard so much furniture it’s not like it’s hard to find by the side of the road even sometimes.

More low life political stunts for votes.

Lock them up for human trafficking

It seems to be a misuse of the very vulnerable refugees. It is also a brilliant ploy. There is nothing wrong with the rest of the nation bearing a larger share of the load. When it is a far away problem and is abstract it is easier to let others deal with it. If Abbott and De Santis put a little more effort into choosing and getting informed consent from their victims it would be hard to find anything wrong in it.

That's the easy part. I understand housing is pretty expensive and in short supply.

Absolutely; affordable housing is a big issue all around here. As soon as something comes up, some richer person wants to snap it up, slap a coat of paint on it, and turn it into an Airbnb.

Why don't the homeless people just rent those?

George Takei had the insightful observation that we did the same thing with Japanese Americans during World War II - ship all the politically undesirable people somewhere else so they're not my problem any more.  The ultimate NIMBY approach.

Ya know, in the spirit of kindness, people in the North could start shipping our homeless to the South for winter, so that they don't have to suffer in the cold. Just sayin'.

And at least one load was required to sign waivers.

The next town over (Amherst) just got an anonymous, blocked, call that we're getting a busload. Our services are mobilizing up.

You would have to obtain by fraud and hold against their will. This doesn't appear to be that.

It also can't be human trafficking, because in the US it can only be human trafficking if the person is used for sex.

They lied to them about where they were being taken.

Hi Robert,

I believe that is a definition of fraud.

Oh, how I would love to see DeSantis in handcuffs.  And, I'm not talking about in the bedroom.

Taking farmworkers to a vineyard is a crime now?

Not at all!  I am sure they were appreciative of the free ride.

Along the same lines, Texas has a labor shortage and San Francisco has a large homeless population.  There's a simple and obvious solution there as well.

If we ran poverty more like a business these problems would magically resolve.

Actually, many of them have relatives in other (distant) cities, and some even have their initial immigration judge meetings scheduled in the next few days, also in other (distant) cities. Now everyone is trying to figure out how to get people to where they need to go.

It's all about being perceived hurting someone else (hurting the right people), even if it hurts one's self also.

I don't think we want to play tit-for tat in the cruelty game.  The USA is better than that (I hope).

If Abbott and DeSantis want to parade the ugly side of the GOP  to arouse their base, I suspect it will come back to haunt them in the long run.

The new evangelical christian.

"While visiting a private Christian college in southern Michigan that wields influence in national politics, Gov. Ron DeSantis rephrased a biblical passage to deliver a message to conservatives.

Put on the full armor of God. Stand firm against the left’s schemes. You will face flaming arrows, but if you have the shield of faith, you will overcome them, and in Florida we walk the line here,” DeSantis told the audience at Hillsdale College in February. “And I can tell you this, I have only begun to fight.”...He and other Republicans on the campaign trail are blending elements of Christianity with being American and portraying their battle against their political opponents as one between good and evil."

Wrapping themselves in the cloak of god. Even if it costs immigrants pain and suffering.

Anyone who would use human beings like single use toys to make cheap political points is unfit to lead. Period.
