Great story in the NYT today from a Venezuelan immigrant. He arrived in the US penniless and is now earning $2,600 a month and saving to buy a car. He sends $600 a month home to support his son."I have nothing,” Mr. Alejos, 29, said on his third day in the city, “but I have the will to work and succeed...“There is so much opportunity here,” he said on Thursday, at the end of a day’s work. “You just have to take advantage of it.”. He used to own a machine-repair shop.

Abbott paid for his bus trip to Washington. Others not so lucky " found work clearing trees for real estate developers in the San Antonio area, amassing enough money to buy one-way flights to New York."

He "has acquired a new cellphone and ear buds, shirts and trousers, and shoes. “I try to keep my priorities straight,” he said. “I’m not splurging. I am trying to build an emergency fund.. In three weeks, he hopes to buy a 2012 Honda Civic."

“I always show initiative, performing extra tasks here and there that my supervisor notices,” he said. “This could lead to something bigger; I’m gaining experience.”

“What I need now is to achieve financial stability, he said. “Next will come professional growth.”

Not the story that the GOP likes to hear. For republicans, immigrants all just want to arrive put their feet up and freeload.
