jakee 1,497 #28 October 22, 2022 Per an actual relevant point - given that Musk can simply decide on the level of moderation he wants Twitter to have, why is 5000 people losing their jobs a good thing?

Because it's becoming more and more apparent that Musk is on Putin's side. Removing that much moderation will allow the trolls in St Petersburg free reign. You know, Trump is awesome, Ukrainians are all Nazis, Covid vaccines are dangerous, all that sort of shit that the gullible idiots fall for.
jakee 1,497 #30 October 22, 2022 Honestly I think those tweets came from simple ignorance and a need to be the centre of attention rather than pushing a pro-Putin agenda. We should be careful to recognise that Musk is actually providing a hugely important and very expensive service to Ukraine for free and footing the bill himself - I don’t think the likes of Boeing, Lockheed, AT&T can say the same. So while he is an asshole who doesn’t know when to shut up, his company has (so far) really gone above and beyond in support of Ukraine.
ryoder 1,590 #31 October 22, 2022 ArsTechnica: US might bail Musk out by blocking Twitter deal over national security ...Bloomberg reports that the Biden administration is considering launching national security reviews into Musk’s Twitter and Starlink satellite Internet deals. Those reviews could end up blocking the Twitter deal after all, which many commenters think is exactly what Musk wants. LOL!

I'm not a big Musk fan, but it is clear that he is a complicated man with a mix of motivations. Some noble and some crass.

I'm not sure I believe them, but the tweet about Russia's demands (keep Crimea, elections, ect) were pretty much pro-Putin. And he floated the idea of charging Ukraine for Starlink. That idea was withdrawn after the backlash, but he still threw it out there. I agree that he's an asshole, but I'm not so sure about the 'above and beyond' part of his support. Right, he floated the idea of charging for it (which really means the US government paying) but he is still providing it for free. What other major American companies are doing the same? gowlerk 2,198 #37 October 28, 2022 It appears nearly certain that the deal will close tonight or tomorrow. The existing executives have been fired this evening. The NYSE is stopping trading in the stock as it is expected to go private. https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/musk-posts-video-himself-strolling-192149234.html

They did a fantastic job for shareholders in the price they realized for a money losing operation. If you think they ran a social media company into the ground. You'd be right. All social networks eventually figure out they cannot exist without moderation.
