I think a lot of people are deeply motivated by safety, and knowing what’s right is safer, even if you have to limit your world view to accommodate that “rightness.” Consider how careful minorities had to be; they had to be perfect, because otherwise, as long as there was one facet in which a good ol’ boy was better, that overshadowed everything else.

Thats the same standard by which lots of people measure those they disagree with.

Actually, it was the other way around.

Minorites had to be super careful to NOT be 'too good'.

Because if one of the 'good ole boys' got his feelings hurt when one of them outshone him, it got ugly.
