brenthutch 444 #1 Posted December 7, 2022 A COAL MINE. https://balkangreenenergynews.com/wind-farm-in-germany-is-being-dismantled-to-expand-coal-mine/ Now in order to comply with Wendy’s strict compliance standard (for me) I now must now make an additional comment. er um..(clears throat)…I find this development to be…uh…what’s the word….IRONIC! Yes that’s it ironic. Ironic and hysterical.

Putin just blew up the natural gas pipelines that feed Europe. Everyone is scrambling to find alternative fossil sources. I'd be surprised if they WEREN'T expanding mining (and oil drilling, and natural gas transport.) And new renewable sources. This summer Germany passed a law that will see 10 gigawatts of wind a year installed. https://windeurope.org/newsroom/news/10-gw-of-new-wind-farms-a-year-german-parliament-adopts-new-onshore-wind-law/
riggerrob 643 #3 December 7, 2022 The dismantled wing turbine was built in 2001, hence 21 years old. Wind turbines only have a 30 or 40 year service life.

So it still had around ten to twenty years to go and instead of replacing them with newer, larger and more efficient windmills they opted for a lignite coal mine. If Russia wanted to cut supply to Europe, they could just turn off the spigot at their end. The destruction of the pipeline had the effect of weakening Russia’s bargaining power and helped to keep Germany from getting wobbly.

Putin could have done the same thing by feigning maintenance issues shutting off the gas and blaming the West for its embargo of Russia. Why would Germany cave to Russian pressure, if Russia was unable to restore gas flows. Russia blowing up its pipeline is like a kidnapper shooting the hostages during negotiations. But Putin has his supporters everywhere. Even on here, where certain people are pretending Putin didn't sabotage the pipeline. Or maybe 'just asking questions'. You know, the old "I don't actually support Putin, but I'm going to ask anyone who says something mean about him for 'evidence'. 'Cuz I don't believe he did ANY of that." billvon 2,990 #15 December 9, 2022 In real news: Five new wind farms are coming to California's waters in the near future. The auction for the leases generated almost a billion dollars for the US government, and offshore wind peaks right at sunset when power demands are greatest. Win-win. https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/12/07/five-companies-win-california-offshore-wind-energy-leases/ In New Jersey, a coal fired power plant was demolished to make room for a battery array that will provide more peak power than the coal plant did, improving grid reliability. It will save customers $30 million over the next two years. Win/win. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/coal-fired-plant-imploded-in-new-jersey-for-battery-array/ar-AA14O6BJ#comments Natural gas will make up approximately 38% of US generation in 2022. In 2023 that is predicted to drop to 36% as renewables generate more and more, and that trend is likely to continue as cheaper renewables let utilities stop buying expensive natural gas. This will have the side effect of reducing natural gas demand, thus reducing homeowners' energy bills for gas. Win/win. https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/natural-gas-power-plants-begin-their-inevitable-decline/ar-AA13Cv4E
