If your heart is set on a 7 cell then take a good look at the PD Storm. Personally I would recommend a Sabre 2 or Pulse - both 9 cells.

Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

Agreed!
Nine-cells have a larger flare-window, meaning that they are more foregiving of poorly-timed flares.

Thats good to know... seems like 9's would be better for beginners overall then? WHats the plus of a 7 cell?

I think they should be called low or high aspect ratio canopies.
Low generally beeing 7 cells and high as beeing 9 cells.

The reason is that a 7 cell crossbrace has more similaraties with a 9 cell because it has a high aspect ratio.

To answer your question you really need to know what 7 cell, but if we are talking general advantages of 7 cell it would be better heading on opening.
But with the newer 7 cells the gap between 7 cell and 9 cell is less regarding flare, but I don't know about the heading.

Ah, I was thinking about this all wrong then, it has to do with chord length and aspect ratio since the same sqft remains... THAT makes a lot more sense than I had considered.

Just curious, I think my student canopy (navigator) was 9 cell, no?

Yes, Navs are 9 cells.

EDIT: Why triathlon? Is there a reason for thinking about the triathlon, rather than -say- the Pilot?
Pilot are excellent beginners canopy (excellent canopies in general, but they are very solid to packing mistakes and wrong body position, nice openings, very docile... people who have them, love them, I only have 5-10 jumps on a Pilot 190 and it was a very comfortable ride).
I'm standing on the edge
With a vision in my head
My body screams release me
My dreams they must be fed... You're in flight.

I don't think I'd recommend the Storm as a beginner canopy.
Spectre? Sure. Storm...not so fast. It's aggressive.
I'm a fan of the Sabre 2, Pulse, and Sihouette. Silhouettes share some similarities to the Navigator, pack ridiculously easily, and can be sporty or docile. I jumped Silhouettes for several years before going to a Sabre2, then to the Storm. I mostly jump Storms and Pulses now (our wingsuit school offers both in the student rigs).

Oversimplification!
Precise landing canopies are truly "low aspect ratio" with span under 2 to 1.
Most 7-cells have "medium aspect ratios" of 2.2 to 1,

... while most 9-cells are "high aspect ratio" in the 2.6 to 1 range.

If you want to see truly "high aspect ratios," look at para-gliders!

for a 7 cell...the Storm 170 (pitch angle is 16.66 degrees measured)

For a 9 cell...the Sabre 2-170 (pitch angle is 15.34 degrees measured)

Note 1 - A 9 cell canopy will generally provide you with a stronger flare and more support at landing

Note 2 - A larger pitch angle will increase the vertical and the horizontal speeds which can be interesting while jumping in higher wind conditions. According John LeBlanc from PD, two other factors contribute to do that too like the design of the canopy and the distribution of the load on the suspension lines.

Note 3 - More horizontal speed means also more support and more flare at landing
Learn from others mistakes, you will never live long enough to make them all.

Agree re Sabre 2. Search this forum and you'll probably not find any negative comments on this canopy.

I started with one, have one now & plan to buy another.

Spectre all the way. Lots of people jump Sabre 2s, and even though they are better now they still have a tendency for hard openings at times. I have just under 180 jumps on my Spectre and every opening is like a cushion. Plus, it is fun to fly.
