But also at the moment asylum seekers have to physically get to the US first. Are you happy that anyone, anywhere in the world can find the closest US Embassy, have their asylum claim fairly assessed, and if it is genuine they get to come to the US from there? They can go to the US embassy in Mexico, we are talking about the situation on our southern border. UN definition of refugee: Someone who, owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country No mention of folks looking to get a better job BTW I would love to hear your plan Edited December 23, 2023 by brenthutch

You said refugees would have to apply at the Embassy in their home country. Most people at the southern border are not Mexicans. Are you going to have a list of countries where asylum seekers can apply at the US embassy and a list of countries where they can't? I think I now understand why you were so confused just now. I was talking about what you actually said and you apparently didn't know what you'd said. 2 hours ago, brenthutch said: No mention of folks looking to get a better job And? So you sit back in the cheap seats and snipe at someone who has the balls to put something out there. If I were you I would do the same. It’s better to remain silent be thought of as an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Edited December 23, 2023 by brenthutch

No one knows what it was you out out there. Are you copying Hungary or not? Are you letting asylum seekers apply in their home countries or do they have to go to Mexico? You might wanna simmer down on the self congratulation, you’re hardly taking a bold and unique stand based on strong principles here. 10 hours ago, brenthutch said: If I were you I would do the same. gowlerk 2,249 #59 December 24, 2023 America, and Canada for that matter were not populated by refugees. They were and will be populated by "economic migrants". Starving people are highly motivated. I understand the desire to keep the gates closed from the flood but I have a real hard time with the lack of respect for the people who face this ordeal. Is there no limiting principle? Anyone from anywhere can just come and stay with no regard to the limitations of schools, hospitals and other public services? Biden started this fiasco by playing Santa Claus with our immigration system, someone is going to have to play Krampus to get it fixed. Re-designating Venezuelans? Should we be sanctioning Mexico into de-stabilization or just invade them and send our troops to their southern border? The reality is that the conditions that create economic migration aren't a hell of a lot changed since your relatives left Africa (that's right, you weren't chased out by "others") except that now we are compounding the natural effects of entropy with hundreds of years of conquest, colonialization, and just being our natural asshole selves to each other. The bottom line is that there are a crap pot more rats on this small rock than there was in the good old days and it's only going to get busier at the borders of the haves. Merry Christmas to you, too.
