kjritchie 0 #1 July 30, 2013 I've been thinking about this for a while and had to finally ask: Has anyone attempted to skydive out of a 2-seater paraglider? If my brother (both of us are qualified) flew our paraglider, can I skydive out of the back? FreeFallFiend 0 #2 July 30, 2013 People have been doing it for a long time now. I know it is or was very common to do it out west with BASE rigs. I believe however last year the USHPA put some new rules into effect to try and stop it from occurring anymore.Fiend I am about to take my last voyage, a great leap in the dark. - Thomas Hobbes. kjritchie 0 #3 July 30, 2013 That's too bad - I feel like it would be a great way to skydive. It wouldn't be as expensive either. But hey, thanks for the help.
FreeFallFiend 0 #4 July 30, 2013 Dont take my word for it. As I mentioned I dont know the specifics. For all i know they just had an issue with the base gear and/or exit/opening altitude. If it's something you want to do reach out to those in the paragliding community. Quietly. I'm a firm believer in it's better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. SansSuit 1 #7 July 31, 2013 OK, what are the legalities in the US concerning jumping from a powered paraglider? "I know a guy" who has a 2 seat PPG. Assume that we want to do this over a normal dropzone, with all applicable permissions. 1. Is it legal to jump from a PPG? 2. What license does the pilot need to hold? The pilot is not a jumper and believes in following rules and shit. Paragliders (powered or not) are ultralights under Part 103: http://www.usppa.org/Resources/FARs/part103_far.htm Part 103 mandates *single* occupant, so an exemption is required for a passenger. Here is the USHPA's exemption(unpowered): http://www.ushpa.aero/4721.asp The USPPA also has an exemption(powered): http://www.usppa.org/Training/Exemption9751A-Extension-Until-2012-09-30.pdf Both exemptions are clearly limited to instructing new pilots in the operation of the paraglider."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. dwhenline 0 #10 August 7, 2013 I believe that two person PPG qualifies as a light sport aircraft and not an ultralight. they are N registered and you need a sport license to fly one. Under that circumstance, I believe you could legally jump out of one. not 100 % sure but 98% sure don
