freeflye73 0 #1 April 19, 2010 Hi! Do anybody have some pictures of a sliding door installed in a cessna 206?. The one that was installed in the cessna our DZ has rented was not usable, it was mounted 5 to 10 inches below the ceiling. They had to install a fabric door instead. //JF
riggerrob 643 #2 April 19, 2010 I have only worked from a couple of Cessna U206s with in-flight doors. The roll-up fabric door was not very practical with tandems, because we needed an extra crew member (e.g. outside videographer) to roll up the door. The slide-up, clear Lexan door was much better, because it could be operated by a tandem master after he had attached his student. Yes, the Lexan door reduces head room, because it slides maybe 5 inches below the ceiling, but since I have "sat" all my tandem exits for the last 15 years, it does not bother me. I suspect that the slide-up Lexan door was installed at Yolo County Airport, California. There is an aircraft overhaul facility beside Action Air (parachute sales) and Skydance (skydiving school). Yolo County Airport is a half hour west of Sacremento, California.
totter 2 #3 April 19, 2010 I've installed a few lexan doors. Sorry, I don't have any personal pictures of the installs, but if you Google N1954L, you can see some pictures from the outside. The aircraft is now located at Xtreme Divers in Puerto Rico. The door that you refer to was mounted that way because with the standard rectangle lexan panels the door can not make the tight turns or the complex bend because of the tpaer of the fuselage. You can install the door so that it fits tight against the ceiling. The hardest part is cutting the lexan panels. The panels need to taper to one end and then the panels are installed with the tapers opposite each other. This allows the door to make the bend at such a tight radius. If anyone has some pictures of the Beech 18, at Richmond, that would also help. The 18 has a small fuselage radius at the lexan door was installed tight against the fuselage. Same concept, just a different bird.

The tracks on our door follows the roof. I'll try to find a picture and post it.If you're not living on the edge; you're taking up too much room! totter 2 #6 April 20, 2010 That door would be totally un-useable. All the doors that I've ever installed have that tracks flush with or as close as possible to the ceiling, following the contour of the fuselage.
vpjr 18 #7 April 21, 2010 Looks like the Mech didnt finish it because of that nice headliner.
totter 2 #8 April 21, 2010 QuoteLooks like the Mech didnt finish it because of that nice headliner I noticed that also. Definitely to nice for a jump ship.
freeflye73 0 #9 April 21, 2010 The interior is newly renovated (white), then they go and rent it to us to use as a jump ship. What were they thinking //JF
andreeb77 0 #10 April 21, 2010 Here's a picture of a sliding door (clear plastic reinforced with aluminium) in a 206. It runs in plastic rails. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more pictures of this configuration.
freeflye73 0 #11 April 21, 2010 Thanks. Anybody know if the fuselage differ from different year, our rented cessna is old 1969, and it looks likes the body taper more then the one in your picture. //JF
andreeb77 0 #12 April 21, 2010 Not sure if the fuselage has changed from model to model. I think the main difference is that in your picture the rails are made of some rigid material. In our 206 the rails follow the form of the fuselage more closely ("softer" plastic of the rails).
totter 2 #13 April 21, 2010 Quote("softer" plastic of the rails) The rails are usually made out of UMH Teflon, 1/4" thick by 2" wide. It can be bent and molded to conform to just about any radius.

totter 2 #15 April 21, 2010 Quoteplane left PR about a year ago, maybe more Maybe its in Humacao? Theres video on YouTube of it flying in Humacao, July 2009. Plus I was informed by someone who works for the aircraft owner that it was still there.
JohnMitchell 16 #16 April 21, 2010 QuoteGot this picture from one of our pilots, unless you are a really small person its nearly impossible to fit under with camera gear on your head. Looks like the door with the shorter (skinnier) panels can follow a much tighter radius for the rails, permitting a higher, tighter to the ceiling, installation. I corrected the date on the description, read the date it was posted, it was on July 2008 . I noticed the typo right after uploading it. so yeah, pretty sure the plane is not here...and if it is, is not flying jumpers.HISPA #93 DS #419.

colin 0 #24 November 20, 2011 Was that from the Irish Parachute Club? I was doing a deal with them for one but I was told it had been destroyed, maybe it went to you instead? I'm still looking for a 206 door if there is one available. Colin
