Election threats against women

Recommended Posts

Last week Julia Roberts did an ad for Harris, telling women that they can vote however they want, and don't have to tell anyone how they voted, since US votes are secret.  This took off in an unexpected way - women have been leaving notes in women's bathrooms reminded other women that their vote is secret.

This also started an unexpected firestorm of anger from the right.

John McEntee, Trump campaign official and Project 2025 author, posted a video that endorsed male-only voting to eliminate the "threat."

Charlie Kirk, infamous Trump supporter, said that if his wife voted for someone and didn't tell him, it would be “the same thing as having an affair.”

Newt Gingrich: “For them to tell people to lie is just one further example of the depth of their corruption.  How do you run a country…saying wives should lie to their husbands, husbands should lie to their wives? I mean, what kind of a totally amoral, corrupt, sick system have the Democrats developed?”  It should be noted that Gingrich cheated on his first two wives.

Jesse Watters:  “If I found out Emma [his wife] was going to the voting booth and pulling the lever for Harris, that’s the same thing as having an affair. That violates the sanctity of our marriage. What else is she keeping from me? What is she lying about? Why would she do that and vote Harris? Why would she say she was voting… If I caught her and she said, ‘I lied to you for the last four . . . ." The interviewer then interrupted him: "So you'd intimidate . . . " He continued:  "It's over Emma!  That would be D-Day!"

MAGA pastor Dale Partridge: “in a Christian marriage, a wife should vote according to her husband’s direction . . .he is the head and they are one.  This is not controversial.” Partridge declared.

Far right pastor Joel Webbon declared that women should vote the same as their husbands.  "This is the Christian position," he declared.

Trump himself has urged women to get their "fat pig husbands off the couch" and get them to vote for him to "save America."  And yesterday he expressed a hope that Liz Cheney, a prominent republican who does not support Trump, be shot.  Not sure either of those approached will increase his support among women voters.

GOP: "Hey! Just because we gave women the right to vote, didn't mean we intended for them to vote for whoever they wanted!"

This is the problem I see with mail in ballots. They can be done at the kitchen table with whoever is dominant in the household watching to see that their will is enforced. Or even that the payment received is honoured.

Hi Bill,

Let's see what they have to say when they are no longer getting laid.

Skymama and I voted side by side in adjoining voting booths, we openly talked about our votes to be sure we were making the choices we had discussed. Hey, I suck with names and have trouble remembering them. If we all had an IP address, I'd remember that for freaking ever. Stupid brain.

Anyway, when we were walking in we jokingly told the volunteers that we would be cheating off of each other. They laughed and supported the idea.

I used to help my dad vote (he was legally blind, and of course hated wearing his hearing aids). We'd ask for the farthest booth, and tell them we were going to be talking out loud, because I read every race to him. No one ever objected.

Of course, I also read the entire 14-page(!) release to him before he signed it when he made a tandem jump, too. Thorough guy, my dad.

We have talked about misogyny in the US before, but I’m truly shocked at the level of backlash over this ad.

The American right have more in common with Iran and the Taliban than they care to admit.

100% they do. Taliban are brown and therefor bad, but what they stand for is completely interchangeable with evangelicals.

While that's potentially true with mail in, the in person early voting that I did (on Monday) worked the very similar to 'election day' voting. I was given a ballot and an envelope. I took the ballot to a 'voting cubicle', filled it out, folded it up (as instructed) sealed the envelope and dropped it in a box.

No opportunity for anyone to have any direct influence on it, at least not without the staff noticing.

As a conservative woman, this is bull freaking shit.

I have my own opinions just as every woman.

The ad  that says  "you women can vote whoever you want " infantizes women.  How  condescending is this?

Think about this..

And just to  add, Abortion has always been legal  in the case of the mother's health. This woman didn't have a live baby, but the hospital would not perform a D&C to remove toxic tissue.

This poor woman got caught between the rhetoric and the law.  She lost her life, not because it was against the law, but the hospital thought  it may be..

It is effectively not legal in Texas now.  Several women have died due to Texas prosecutors emphasis on their strict abortion laws, and the Texas Supreme Court has decided at least one case where a nonviable fetus could not be aborted, even though the abortion was to protect the life of the mother.  Fortunately she had the resources to leave the state to get the abortion.  For now, that's still legal.

Sadly, this will continue until the law is modified.

You  are barking up the wrong tree.  Go after  the hospitals that are wrongly interpreting the law.

If you’ve seen the very vocal outcry that man is the head of the home and women should submit to their husbands, or that voting differently to your husband is the same as cheating, I think you would see how sensitive a nerve this hit among men.

It’s not condescending at all, what it hints at is an epidemic of coercive control in the US, something that is classified as criminal domestic  violence in many Western countries and not tolerated.

I am not barking up any tree.  I am pointing out what is happening as the result of Texas abortion bans.

Quote

There is no  law in any state that disallows abortion when the heath of the mother is concerned

The Texas Supreme Court disagrees with you, as they stated in their decision.  And when it comes to a doctor trying to decide whether to save the life of a woman in their care and risk their career and jail time, or let her die and keep their job, that doctor will heed the Texas Supreme Court and not your opinion on the matter.

No, that’s not true. The baby was still alive, but guaranteed to die. The hospital would not do anything because it would still count as an abortion, the mother was not yet sick, and they didn’t know where the line in the sand was.

That is a deliberate feature of the law. The whole point is to make the limits so vague and the potential punishments so harsh that doctors would self sensor to the maximum extent, while giving state courts cover to leave the law in place because it doesn’t specifically say it’s that harsh.

While the State Attorney General is threatening to prosecute them with the full force of the law if they interpret it ‘correctly’?

That’s not rhetoric, he would do it - exactly as the conservative politicians who wrote the law intended.

It's a sad commentary on the American public that there are people who are so incapable of critical thinking.  And they are allowed to vote.

I'd like to remind you that your "conservative" hero is an adulterer, an admitted sexual predator, a convicted fraud,  a proven thief who stole from a charity, and a pathological liar.

Bullshit - the hospitals do not actually get to interpret the law.... a DA, county/State prosecutor, a judge and jury, in a courtroom, after a trial, gets to interpret the law.

And they are not taking that risk, and nor would you or anyone else.

People who claim 'there is no abortion ban' are generally outsiders who do not nor are willing to see the reality of the implications.

If the law was a one-day abortion window, then you would be able to say the same thing 'See! There is no abortion ban!  I have no idea what the problem is!'
