The John Birch Society

Hi folks,

I am sure that some of you have never heard of this organization.  I remember it well.

IMO it was an off-shoot of the insanity of the McCarthy Era.

While I have not read it yet [ I will soon ], this book seems to tell a lot about it:  Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right by Matthew Dallek | Goodreads

From the book:  The sisters were taught that both Martin Luther King Jr. and Fred Rogers were communists.

My old man never joined it, but he was certainly influenced by it. He believed their propaganda about MLK.

And I once dated a girl whose parents and brother were proud members. She was normal, but I never had a GF whose family gave me the creeps like those people. [shudder]

Hi Jerry,

I grew up in Appleton. Currently a few miles down the road.

Appleton, birthplace of the Birch Society, home to Joe McCarthy. 
There's a life size bronze bust of him, currently in the county museum.

It sat in the courthouse most of my younger life.
