I gotta say that the various ADS-B receivers (and associated apps) have revolutionized things quite a bit. A decent ADS-B RX will have ADS-B, GPS, real time weather and backup attitude - which gives you not only air traffic and weather, but is a quite capable IFR navigation and attitude reference platform. And it still takes me an hour of paperwork/prep/preflight/runup/shutdown for every hour I fly. Now imagine you're flying a $100 million aircraft that costs $50K an hour to fly, and that carries weapons. That's going to take just a tad more effort. Turkey is now trying to sell the system which has never been deployed in Turkey. Its still sitting in boxes in Turkish warehouses. So it can rejoin the F-35 program, which of course the US has refused to allow. We were spelling out the repercussions to Turkey way back when I was a diplomat there, when Turkey was just considering whether to purchase the S-400s. At the same time they welcomed the U.S. Patriot battery on loan to help guard against attacks from Syria. We tried to warn them, but they had to ... "find out." Because it was politically advantageous to do so. I hope you don't think weapons systems are ordered/obtained based purely on their value to the military! If you do, consider the KC-X contract disputes from a few years back.

The KC-X is an excellent example of how politicians, insiders, weapons suppliers and lobbyists drive the $800 billion machine. Although Canada and some other countries are worse when it comes to domestic jobs/politics first. Functioning of the system and value are way down the equation. Now the best thing about Trump is that his government will be run by rich campaign donors! It really all makes sense if you just look at it sideways and squint a bit. Not like a cult at all.
