I wonder why the perps with nefarious intent are flying drones at night with their position lights on.

I am reminded that NJ went into hysterics over Orson Welles' broadcast of War of the Worlds in 1938.

And that I have been part of a UFO sighting as recently as 2010.

The news media is all wound up on drones because not much else is going on.  The link below does a pretty good job of explaining it but I am sure that won't settle it for a lot of people.  

They are a mix of airplanes, hobby, commercial and law enforcement drones.  You can see them because they have lights on like they are supposed to at night, that's why you can see them.  It is winter and gets dark earlier.

This panic isn't coming from the government.  It's coming from the same place that gave us satanic panic, video games cause violence, the area-51 conspiracy theories and the "9/11 truthers."

Just because the panic is coming from ordinary citizens dosent mean the government is being truthfull about the situation.

Probably not.  I suspect 100% of the people in the government have no idea what's going on.  

But there are two possible explanations:

1) They are aliens / Chinese drones / chemtrail spraying mind control drones (pick your conspiracy theory)

2) They are airplanes, ordinary agricultural, survey and hobbyist drones and helicopters, being seen more often now because it gets dark earlier and people can't tell one set of green and red lights from another.

Occam says they are #2 unless proven otherwise.

Those are the two top categories of explanations, yes - a conspiracy like one of the ones listed above, or the normal misidentification of airborne vehicles by people on the ground.  Both categories have endless detail you could add, of course.
