Aren't You Glad You Voted For Trump

When he came to the US? No, obviously not. Why do you want to keep out such a valuable asset?

Tested against whatever your favorite benchmark: Google interview panel, IQ Test, SAT, all of them you don't think he would score high enough to warrant admission?  It's reported he got a 1420 on the SAT which puts him in the top 5%. I'm fine bringing whoever over if they can raise/bring money to start a business or if say the cap is $200K a year on salaries.

I don't think we should bring retail managers or basic development jobs over.

But people who are hot enough that a rich guy might want to bang them is 100% an applicable standard?

Reported by who? Now if we're talking about real world standards like actual exceptional qualifications or a job offer, he had neither. So no, I don't think he'd have warranted admission. I mean - he literally didn't at the time, which is why he had to cheat.

Yes.  That pool is much smaller depending on where the line is drawn.  Melania vs a couple of thousand home coming queens.

Which part of my comment implies that I'm bothered?  You've clearly been away from SC for a loooong while if you do not know where I stand .

I have - if I got that wrong, I apologize.

See Jakee, and John.  Reply with civility, and you get this type of response, reply as y'all usually do, like a but hurt childlike little beeotch and you get the rest.

Do you expect Elon, who has created trillions in value for the US, including I assume hundreds of thousands/millions for you, wouldn't meet the standard?

He would not have met the standard when he was an illegal alien, using a fradulent student visa to work in the US.

Do you also assume Melania would not meat the standard of being a rich guy's wife?

She would not have met the standard when she was an illegal alien, using a tourist visa to let her work in the US (which of course is illegal.)

Now, if your argument is that we should let illegal immigrants stay because they MIGHT be the next Melania or Elon, then I am all for that.

Elon had a 1400 on the SAT.  That's about the bar where we should let people in.  There are probably other tests (Google interview would be an example) that would make sense, so long as Google isn't using it to suppress wages.

Transparency would go a long way.

OK, so to be clear -

If illegal aliens score well on standardized tests they should be allowed to stay, even if they are criminals.  That's your position?

There should be tests that allow people in that are sufficiently rigorous.

Illegal is sufficiently vague.  Did they rape someone or get caught up working long hours at a startup?

There are.  You can get an H-1B visa if you are good enough.  Since I am part of that process for several co-workers, I know how rigorous it is.  Most illegals - like Melania and Elon - don't bother; they just break the law and do it illegally.  It's SO much easier that way, especially if you are white; you can do it for years and feel no repercussions.

Illegal is sufficiently vague.

Yet specific enough to be cause for mass deportations, according to republicans.  If you are now saying that being illegal is NOT sufficiently specific enough to result in deportation - great, we agree, and the illegal immigration problem has been solved.

Did they rape someone?

You're thinking of Trump.

That's convenient. After knowing what score Elon got, you've decided that exact score is the low end cut off for being allowed in... with no additional requirements for actual relevant to employment qualifications or expertise. Sounds legit.

It's the 95th percentile. Top 5% seems like a good line.

I'm going to say that H1B visas shouldn't be for someone with potential, they're for someone with proven capacity.

That's coming from someone who got that level of score on the SAT, and never became a billionaire tech bro, or sis, or anything else. I was successful, but no more so than any number of people already here.

It doesn't appear to be rigorous in all cases.  I've worked with H1Bs that are incredibly competent but it's the exception and not the rule.  Coupled with some of the cheats like Infosys and the sheer number I've seen, I find it hard to believe it's not abused en masse.

I was at a cafe at Amazon and it was almost 80% Indian.  About two decades ago I was on a team at Verizon that had 3 white people out of 40, the rest Indian H1B.  They primarily hired agency so the H1B was held by the agency and not Verizon.  A lot of people I've worked with end up citizens (H1B is supposed to be non immigrant).  A H1B on my team I gave the renewal for just reached out for a reference.  She worked with me longer than six years ago and still doesn't have a green card.  I know a lot of H1Bs that are here longer than a decade.

Companies hire them because they're cheaper, and because they can get the name credential (STEM degree), and because they come with stated qualifications. They stay because they like it, and often get green cards because they end up marrying co-workers.

If more Americans were to get the STEM degrees that are harder, and if they weren't so burdened with educational debt that they can only afford to take top-paying jobs, it might be different. Being a federal contractor, we actively went after graduates from HBCUs as well as the majors, and had about the same percentage of good luck from them. Not every employee works out.

When I was working, the nature of the work was such that you had to be a citizen. Another group had a summer intern from Montenegro once, and finding work that she could do was a significant task for her manager.

1400 is far from genius level.  You typically need 1520 to be considered for admission to MIT, for example.

And even then, those tests are very poor predictors of ability to solve novel problems or create new ideas.

"Demonstrated ability" only works if your circumstances are such that you have had the opportunity to demonstrate.

I didn't say genius level, I said top 5%.  Iirc genius is a 150 IQ which from a Google is somewhere between 1% and 0.1%.

I'm fine with the bar being 1% if that's what you are arguing.  I'm trying to allow for mistakes and bad days and setting the bar at 5%.

The capital class shipped all the manufacturing jobs to Mexico and Asia depending on industry.  When the peasants complain they just say, but robots will take your job or we will bring in more immigrants!  Learn to code dummy!  Oh wait, now we will import those too.  Glad you are too unmotivated to revolt, and when you knock over some barrier ropes in the Capitol we can clutch our pearls about it being worse than Pearl harbor then bring in even more people.

The only people that can live like a 1990s truck driver with a below average IQ are immigrants willing to work half market rate because they have some fake qualifications.

Before anyone suggests it, yes I generally agree with a minimum wage that matches inflation, but I don't know how that fixed driving 2 hours to your McDonald's job in a metro willing to pay it.

Hi folks,

Looks like buyer's remorse:  The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), which endorsed Trump in September 2024, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) warned that the blanket clemency offered to rioters – including those convicted of violent offenses, and several leaders of the attack on the Capitol – threatened Americans’ safety.

Barely on FB anymore, but a few friends in the US who are normally silent on politics are posting lots of concerning stuff.

One in particular works for the CDC and has been posting the impacts of the funding and policy changes. She’s an expert in vaccines, so has been pretty hard hit by it all

Hi Nigel,

Re:  has been pretty hard hit by it all

That's nothing; wait until RFK Jr gets into office.

IMO the only person crazier than him is Trump himself.

Can’t believe that Trump politicised a plane crash while recovery efforts were underway. He’s a despicable excuse of a person.

Not even to mention that he had fired aviation safety officials less than a week before, because Elon complained they were too strict and hampering Space X with their safety requirements.
