Convinced me to go to church with her on Christmas Eve. It was more of a Broadway production than a church service monitors live band, people singing, and dancing and I like the singing part. It seem too much like I was being sold something.

Jesus Saves does sound like a dollar store ad.

I grew up around the American prosperity cults, evil fuckers

Hi airdvr,

That is what they do.  Did you expect something else?

Many yrs ago, I watched a tv bio of Billy Graham:  A former employer said he was the best vacuum cleaner salesman he ever saw.

Hi Jerry,

I wasn't sure what to expect.  Certainly wasn't that.  I meant to grab a pic but I left my phone in the car.

You know I'm not a believer.  I was raised attending every week with the folks.  I thought it would be nice.  My mom and grandmother were big on Christmas so I have great memories.  Meh.  Mega church nearby.  Huge auditorium.  God can do it, yes he can.  If God can't do it nobody can.

I'm such a cynic. :)

The only church I really felt like a part of had about 40 people. They got together to worship and discuss with each other, in a way that they thought would be welcoming. It wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but it served our community.

Until the minister had an affair with a parishioner... 40 members just isn't enough to sustain that. Big isn't always better, but neither is small.

Something tells me there was a lot of that kind of thing.

When I was a little kid, my great aunt Gert would drag me to tent revival prayer meetings. This is in the late 1960s.

Think Marjoe Gortner. The preachers were carnival barkers.  Speak in tongues and pass that offering tray!

It was scary as hell and at 8-9 years old I could tell it was all BS.

Small, big…the grift is always in.

Hi Rich,

Shades of Elmer Gantry.

IMO a very good movie; I never read the book.
