John, you know the university ropes, for sure. Here's my issue: Trump is, over bogus stuff which is his thing, cutting $400M in Grants, Funding etc. to Columbia University. Of course, he's an ass for doing it for the obvious reasons. Columbia is cancelling this and that now to show all of the pain it causes. But, Columbia has a $14.8 Billion Dollar endowment. CD interest would make up more than the $400 Million. Please tell me why, for at least for some years, Columbia couldn't just absorb it?

Surely you don't think that they are currently discarding that interest? They are cutting expenses so that their income (including interest, grants, funding, tuition) can cover their expenses. Keep in mind that if you want to keep an endowment you have to grow it at least at the rate of inflation - and that is about to skyrocket.

My ignored question was why can’t a billionaire college ride out a few years without harming this year’s students and diminishing important programs? i am not privy to the details of the Columbia budget, but I imagine if it's like ours, most of the endowment is tied up for very specific purposes and not available to fill an unbudgeted big hole in operations. Donors like to give money for buildings, new labs, named professorships, etc. but hardly anyone gives money for maintenance or day-to-day operations. Thank you but it seems to me that if Columbia's plan, or any institution with that level of endowment, requires an annual infusion of cash equal to 3% of reserves to operate without drastic cuts and changes they really ought to restaff their economics department. wmw999 2,507 #92 March 8 I have a feeling that Columbia needs all that money for the same reason that the US needs all that staffing, and nearly everyone in American thinks they need all the money they have/earn. Because they're used to it, they operate that way, and changing is hard and potentially destructive. Just sayin' Wendy P.

No-one donates money to the "unrestricted" fund.

billvon 3,049 #100 March 9 Amy Coney Barrett is feeling the #tregret after Trump supporters started attacking her on social media for her decision to not freeze USAID funding, which Trump tried to do unconstitutionally last week. Mike Cernovich: “She is evil, chosen solely because she checked identity politics boxes. Another DEI hire. It always ends badly." Fox News host Mark Levin said she “deceived people into thinking she was a reliable constitutionalist. The power has gone to her head. It happens with frightening regularity the last half-century.” Laura Loomer: “Amy Coney Barrett was a DEI appointee.” Jack Posobiec said she was a “DEI judge”. Mike Davis: "She’s a rattled law professor with her head up her ass." What woke liberal loser appointed her, anyway?
