"Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it.  Every year fewer and fewer words, and the range of consciousness always a little smaller." - 1984

"The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of Ingsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible." - 1984

HiBill,

As most of us know, they are afraid of the truth.

So where do we go from here? I'll guess you won't distribute the economic security you accrued for your family in a futile defense of our failing democracy or let yourself become an identifiable profile for attack for when they start looking. I sure won't. Probably the conversion of American society to drone status is at least a decade or more away so I'm good; I have have a few different contingency plans in place for just this possibility. But you have kids and their futures to consider. So what are you willing to do now?

This could be a great list!

Unhoused

Gender affirming care

Reproductive rights

Undocumented workers

Pre-existing condition

Gun control

Stay home together

Mostly peaceful protest

Public health crisis

Domestic terrorist

Current right wing

Groomer

Election integrity

Cancel culture

911 era right

Enhanced Interrogation

Enemy combatant

Regime change

From Politics of the English Language, 1984s companion

> The word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies ‘something not desirable’. The words democracy, socialism, freedom, patriotic, realistic, justice, have each of them several different meanings which cannot be reconciled with one another. In the case of a word like democracy, not only is there no agreed definition, but the attempt to make one is resisted from all sides. It is almost universally felt that when we call a country democratic we are praising it: consequently the defenders of every kind of régime claim that it is a democracy, and fear that they might have to stop using that word if it were tied down to any one meaning. Words of this kind are often used in a consciously dishonest way. That is, the person who uses them has his own private definition, but allows his hearer to think he means something quite different. Statements like Marshal Pétain was a true patriot, The Soviet press is the freest in the world, The Catholic Church is opposed to persecution, are almost always made with intent to deceive. Other words used in variable meanings, in most cases more or less dishonestly, are: class, totalitarian, science, progressive, reactionary, bourgeois, equality.

Any rigorous study of Logic includes definition.

High True or Low True applies to circuitry, but argumentative logic includes Lexical, Legal, Scientific, Medical, Stimulative, Precising, Nautical, Medical and so forth.

It is the norm in this forum to have heated arguments where people are using the same words, but everyone is talking about something different.

It's kinda fun when one party tumbles to the fact that someone else is using a different definition, whether it be more or less inclusive, more or less flattering or whatever, and declares with unbridled sanctimony that the other party can't even define the term (got it "wrong").

It's akin to someone using facts like a drunk uses a lightpost - for support, rather than illumination.

EDIT: Trump in Office Countdown Meter

Should say Trump’s second term ends …

At this point there is enough insanity that the calls for a 3rd term or other “legal” extension aren’t impossible.

At this point I’m hoping he chokes on a happy meal toy and we can get some sanity back in the US.

Thats a depressingly large number of days.

Ken,

Given your background and skillsets you are very qualified to comment on this cross border trade stuff. How do you see things playing out on the ground? For example, the BC government is ready to screw red state Alaska because all essential stuff goes by truck. Of course the Alaska Governor is complaining to BC not Trump because he's a moron but no matter that seems like a lot of leverage.

BC does not control the border and there are agreements in place. Will agreements be honoured? Apparently that depends on the level of hostility the Dotard feels at in whatever moment he is in. It used to be common for Canadian trucks from western Canada going to Toronto to travel through the UP of Michigan very similar to transiting Canada to get Alaska. That stopped being allowed after 9/11.

How the whole thing plays out I have no idea. But cutting Alaska off from road transportation would seem like a non starter to me. A lot of the things I am hearing from Canadians are mostly just talk. The anger is real and it goes far beyond tariffs. Trump has recently talked of redrawing borders. Canadians are starting to talk about the need to develop a nuclear deterrent. The lessons of Ukraine and now an overly aggressive administration make that look more and more attractive.

For me at the moment  as a semi-retired driver I can just sit at home and work on DZ administrative stuff. This is a week I was planning to work but it looks like it will be a long wait in the queue for a load south.

There we go, gender is strictly a grammatical construct.

Gender exists in grammar, therefore all gender is only grammatical?

<sigh> I could have sworn you said something about having studied logic.
