It’s not about making a better product necessarily — if you can degrade your competitor’s product you can also “win.” More and more airports have Clear; their new model to compete with TSA appears to be to actively make TSA worse, by buying exclusive access to as many gates as possible. So now using TSA pre check means it’s less convenient than regular TSA (except for the shoes thing).

I don’t really think that’s a good model, but it seems to fit the times

In 2015, TSA tested itself with undercover teams. They caught 5% of weapons smuggled through. In 2017, they tested it again - they improved to catching 30% of weapons smuggled.

It's never been a good model.

Yep.  Or take a more direct route - simply take over government and give yourself all the contracts, and take away your competitor's.

I would remind you that you got very very angry when your suggestion of TSA style security at every school was called overly expensive security theatre.
