DanDanInc 5 #1 May 1, 2013 I'm a bigger guy and haven't jumped since 2006 since I got injured on my Cat B during my AFF and needed surgery. I blew up to 275 and am now down to 235 and plan to be in the 220's by the time I start AFF this year. My question... What should I wear under my jump suit? What are some things to avoid? I wasn't exactly comfy in my rig under canopy the first time I jumped since it was an older student rig, I was around 245 lbs, and I got's some girth in the leg area. I have been strength training and doing a ton of cardio to get myself ready this time since I didn't the first go around. I was thinking about getting some spandex shorts or something like that. When I jumped last time I was wearing a loose fitting bathing suit shorts type of attire and am not sure if they bunched up at all which might have caused the discomfort or if it was just because I was a fat ass. Thanks! EDIT: (I did a search but couldn't find a good thread regarding my question. The threads I did find involved clothing to wear when you aren't wearing a jump suit.)Sincerely, Daniel (not as fat as he thinks he is) Adams http://www.skyjump.com http://www.vimeo.com/dandaninc http://www.youtube.com/dandaninc
excaza 1 #2 May 1, 2013 Wear whatever is comfortable for you that still allows you to move around. I personally won't wear jeans because they limit my range of motion. I usually wear athletic shorts and rearrange as necessary as you're jocking up so you keep bunching to a minimum.
FlyingRhenquest 1 #3 May 1, 2013 I wear jeans and a T-Shirt. I would very specifically avoid things you might commonly keep in your pocket -- car keys, wallet, One Rings, that sort of thing. Find somewhere else to keep those during the jump. The DZ will probably be happy to hold them for you.I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? Falcon7Zero 0 #4 May 1, 2013 I wear a spandex type short and T-Shirt... They are actually triathlon short and keep the boys in the barn so to speak. They are also designed to shed moisture so they are comfortable on really hot days. A company 2XU makes some reasonably priced and durable compression shorts which are what I use..."I once met three guys named pain, suffering and sacrafice. BIGUN 1,312 #5 May 1, 2013 <------- not a little guy either. Food for thought... I've worn these for years and been commando underneath, Good for skydiving (with or without the jumpsuit), packing, the bonfire, lightweight but durable, etc. http://bdu.com/propper-poly-cotton-ripstop-bdu-pants/khaki Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. tsk06 0 #8 May 1, 2013 I am also a student but I read some threads discussing the fact that student harnesses are usually not very comfortable, especially if you do not have muscular thighs. Based on suggestions of padding there, I bought these shorts that fit underneath my regular pants. Price wise it might be a bit overkill but I went from 'red thighs even the next day to no pain whatsoever during or after jump'.

Primarily for obvious reasons, but not everyone is lucky enough to recover a lost wallet, after a month, hiding in the sleeve of the very same jumpsuit you last wore. Not to mention, I can't even imagine PLF'ing on my keys or cell phone. I'm sure it's been done though.

BigMikeH77 0 #12 May 1, 2013 QuoteHaving a cell phone is good if you happen to land out. Sure but I wouldn't want to have it in, say, a jeans pocket, and land on it in the event of a PLF. Just saying. I'm not starting and not engaging a discussion about what people should or shouldn't carry with them on jumps.

tsk06 0 #17 May 1, 2013 Quote what's wrong with your inner thighs? Same type of thing discussed here and here. Probably the same thing the guy above was referring to. I told my instructors (who have been wonderful), they said the leg straps are correctly secured. The extra couple cm's of padding has been very helpful and results in absolutely no loss in range of motion for me.
DanDanInc 5 #18 May 1, 2013 Thanks everyone! I will reply more in depth tomorrow since I'm leaving work and was stupidly busy all day. I did save the links to the alligator wrestling shorts. DanDanInc 5 #21 May 2, 2013 I definitely think I'm going to pick up some compression shorts. I have a feeling I'm going to have to use the "big boy" student rig that they previously had. NWFlyer 2 #23 May 2, 2013 Quote What are some things to avoid? It would seem on a hot day that "less is more" but I've found that the times I've stripped down to shorts & a sports bra (no, I'm not going without a shirt entirely, though since you're a guy, that might seem logical). What I found is that is an open invitation for the spandex on the back of my jumpsuit to glue itself to my back and actually make me feel more hot and uncomfortable than if I had a t-shirt as a layer underneath."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Some hot days I find myself wishing I had taken up a sport that didn't require sticky nylon suits and 25 pounds of gear. . . Vskydiver made a lined winter jumpsuit that was so warm she'd wear only shorts and a t shirt under it, even in December, just because she could.
