Have you ever had to use your reserve?

Recommended Posts

once, diving linetwists. Twists probably caused by a line snag in the container or a line cought in a tube stoe. Small bungee collapsong PC didn't help much. Must change to a larger kill line PC

I was wondering if anyone here has had to use their reserve and what caused it to be used?

5 times.

1, severe line twist on a stiletto.
2. tension knots on a VX
3. intentional, testing a skyhook.
4. tension knots on the VX AGAIN!>:(
5. bag lock.:o was under my reserve, p.d. 106:)

and i didn't pack any of them. lol...

Twice ... both times on high performance canopies.

The first time (jump #498) a brake fired prematurely on opening causing my canopy to go into a spinning line twists that I couldn't recover from. I never would have known what had happened had I not had a video camera on my head recording the event since it all happened very very fast and very violent.

The second time (somewhere around jump #1050) was also diving line twists that I couldn't recover from. The bungie between my leg straps broke at one point and I was complacent in fixing it. Then on this ill fated jump, my leg strap shifted on opening causing the line twists. For the first second or two, the canopy was flying straight (in line twists), but then it started to dive and since I was jumping an ultra high performance cross-braced canopy, it was easy to decide not to fight it and to go to plan B.

Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

I have 8 reserve rides in 2700+ jumps. Spinning line twists, tension knot and line overs.
If you stay in the sport most likley have to use your reserve. Even with very careful packing malfunctions will happen. If you are not sure you are ready for it, then stop jumping till you are. It could happen on your next jump.

I haven't yet, but I am sure the day will come.

I had my pilot chute hesitation once which I thought was a bag lock when I turned and looked back it cleared my burble and a beutiful canopy opened. I had both hands on red and was going to chop.;)
Some day I will have the best staff in the world!!!

Once, released brakes...steering line broke....panicked (20 or so jumps at the time) pulled right....pulled left......pink reserve!!

I could have used the risers....was taught to. I just freaked. Which is funny because the jump just before that, I'd had a canopy rip on opening. 3 out of 7 cells ripped....I stuck with that and landed just fine :S....but cut a way from a broken steering line [:/].

Had one situation where, in hindsight, I'd have probably been happier if I had; it's no fun landing a canopy with two broken D lines.

No kidding. I landed a broken A-B line on a 5 cell once. It stalled out and broke my damn leg, even with a good PLF. . That's the last time I messed with landing broken lines.

12-13 reserve rides in 4600+ jumps.

Imagine hanging under canopy. Then do a back [or front] flip through your risers. Imagine how risers/lines on a given side would be twisted around themselves. That's a step through. It happens during packing when the deployment bag accidentally gets passed in between the lines/risers.

[if this isn't clear, i'll explain further]
I really don't know what I'm talking about.
