Question about glasses

Hey everyone I know this might sound like a dumb question but I'm going to start my AFF to get my license soon and I was wondering I wear glasses and I don't have contacts is there a way I can wear my glasses or can I get prescription goggles or something?

Yes to both options. Your dropzone should have goggles that fit over glasses (I'd recommend confirming that when you make your reservations, just to be 100% sure).

As for Rx goggles, you may want to hold off on those to see whether you want to stick with skydiving. If you do decide to stick with it, there are several options - sticking with over-the-glasses goggles, wearing a full-face helmet with your glasses underneath, getting Rx goggles, or wearing either goggles or a full-face with contact lenses. No need to rush to that decision.

Not a dumb question in the least. They do make prescription goggles, but they aren't cheap. They also make scrip inserts for the higher end glasses, or just scrip lenses (I'm talking about Liquid or similar that can be used in place of goggles).

The simplest and cheapest solution is the big, dorky looking "over glasses" goggles.
Some people don't like them, they do have to be fairly tight to keep them from flipping up on you in freefall, and they do look ridiculous.

But that's what I've used for over 10 years.

The DZ should have them available (call ahead to make sure) or you can buy your own for about $20. Your own pair of goggles is one of the few things I'd suggest buying early on. While the student goggles work, having a pair that is yours is nice. You can take good care of them and keep them in nice condition (I use an old sock to store them in and keep them protected).

The simplest answer is to attach a strong strap (e.g. Croakies) to the ear pieces of your regular glasses.
Sure, most regular glasses let in too much wind

... but what's the worst that can happen ???

I'm not sure I agree with this. I wear "Aviator" style glasses, fairly large lenses. I wore just my glasses with a "Croakie" strap for the beginning of my Static Line training. It worked fine in the beginning, when I wasn't reaching terminal. But by the time I got beyond 10 second delays, I was picking up too much speed and staying at that speed for too long to go without goggles.
I wouldn't do a full altitude jump without goggles if I had a choice. And I bet the OP's instructors won't either.

I've NEVER worn goggles. I just used an old pair of glasses (with metal frame) with a strap to keep them on my head, worn under my helmet.

Just make sure your prescription is good on that pair.

I never had any more of a problem with tearing or spooging than anyone else.

When I said strap, I'm NOT talking about a "Croakies" type, I mean a secure rubber ended one with velcro or other secure means of tightening.

Sure! You can get goggles that fit over your goggles or prescription goggles. You could always use prescription goggles for motorcycling if you don't like skydiving heh heh.

Of course, why do that when you can get Lasik? Now I know what you're thinking! "But Bruce! I'm about to start the most expensive hobby on the planet! How am I going to afford lasik?" Well I think we can find a solution that everyone can afford!

Best thing you can do is ask for goggles that fit over your glasses. Then when you've finished AFF and are on your own or you know for sure this is something you're going to stick with, you can buy a pair or prescription goggles. I have a pair from www.sportrx.com Just search for skydiving goggles on that site and you'll have plenty to choose from.

As already said, there are plastic goggles designed to fit over your normal glasses. Ask the place where you're doing your AFF, they should have them. This is a necessity in free-fall, since the airspeed is too high to comfortably keep your eyes open without such protection.

My current solution is to use close-fitting sports glasses (I own a Sinner Fushion II) combined with an open helmet when doing CRW (where you never reach high speeds). These close off good enough for the airspeed under canopy, and they come with lenses that can be fit to your prescription right behind the coloured ones. Coloured lenses are also interchangeable (gray, amber and clear are the choices).

I use a full-face helmet with my normal glasses on terminal jumps, but you should only start considering this when you have a fair number of jumps. Full-face helmets have some drawbacks, one of which is reduced vision of your emergency handles.

In all cases, ask your AFF instructors for advice. They get paid to teach you, and will be happy to answer your questions.
