When I set up the WFFC, I slept on the floor of whatever abandoned building the city would give me keys to, with about a dozen other idiots who would show up early to help me set up. Then I would put a small pup tent up in tent city. Eventually, I would have some sort of a rented rv there. Last trip to Couch Freaks, I slept in the back of my Buick LeSabre, big enough for me and the dwarfs! Now that Dave is back on the road with me, I need something that he and I can both sleep in. We are thinking that we could get a decent van, remove the back seat and add a bed. I like the airconditioning idea. I will check into that! excaza 1 #29 December 13, 2012 I'm a weekend warrior so I've tried to build up a kit that I can keep in my car and put up/break down easily. Currently rocking this after my good ol' tent decided to blow down/break/leak one night. A little pricier than I was hoping, but it handles the elements perfectly and it packs down well. I didn't feel like dealing with an air mattress so I went with a pad and some pillows instead. I've never had much luck with cheap tents anyway. I pick a sleeping bag based on the weather, I've got a lightweight one for the summer and a down one for early spring/fall. Other miscellaneous things include a solar charger for my phone, hammock, and swimming/shower stuff. Though I didn't bring a stove with me this year, I think I'll invest in one for next year. Beth, check out my link up thread, you can set up a van similar with the shell of a delivery van. My old one was less professional but not that much different in comfort. A delivery type van afford you enough space to put a full sized bed, toilet/shower, small stove and small AC. for a fraction of the cost of a Winnebago type RV.You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! theonlyski 8 #31 December 13, 2012 I keep a tent (large enough to stand up in), hammer (which seems many people forget they need one till they get to the DZ), stakes, at least 1 air mattress with a 12v pump and a long cable, currently 2 catalytic heaters with some propane tanks, electric chem lights, flashlights/headlamps, a few blankets and pillows and a sleeping bag. Usually not too bad down here, but it does get colder than shit up north (and even this time of the year down here), so there have been plenty of times I had wished I got a hotel room. The air also acts as insulator for colder nights. -2 Flashlights one in the gear bag one in the tent.(One always breaks) -Big plastic trash bags. These are good for those rainy nights. Put your bags in them and anything else you want to keep dry. I also have a contractor bag for the sleeping bag. You can usually mooch a couple off the DZ if you are stuck. -Tarp. Nice to have but not a must -Tarp, hammer, pliers, knife, nylon cord, needle and nylon thread. Nice to have but not a must -duck-tape. We set up an awning outside with a table, camp stove and a couple of coolers (one for food, one for beer, of course ). We sleep in the back of the van on an air mattress. We have cardboard window shades for all the windows so it's quite dark and private. All our gear goes in the front when we crash out at night to keep it safe and dry. The addition of my solar investment (cost more than I’ll ever get back from many years of use, going “green” is expensive) limits the use of my Honda generator to running the microwave or on super hot days the window unit AC. On auto-throttle the generator will run AC for approx. 14 hours on about 1.5 gallons of real gasoline (alcohol is for adult gatherings and racing, not powering generators) The Engel cooler’s limited amperage draw allows me to bring frozen dinners and ice cream for a more enjoyable experience on those hot summer days. Adult beverages have since been banished to the analog Igloo 40qt cooler. Car stereo is wired to work off either car battery or with flip of switch from solar panels and it’s battery. This setup has limited my need for fuel to about 1 or 2 gallons (usually have a lot left over)for a three day weekend depending on the conditions. Winter use of generator is use of heat lamp or small cube space heater with around same consumption as with AC unit. Van died on me this fall and have since bought new ride, in process of realigning and recreating Gumpdom. No doubt it will be bigger and better than version 1.0.
