Skydiving in Africa

Recommended Posts

Okay folks, searched the forums and got a little bit but it seemed a tad dated...

I'm going to spend most of next year working overseas in Africa. I'll be based in Mozambique but expect to travel through much of the southern continent and possibly to the North and West as well. Wondering if anyone has experience at any of Africa's DZs and would be willing to comment on their experiences.

I know there are a few but not sure what to expect compared to jumping here in the states. Also wonder if there are other governing bodies for skydiving overseas and what considerations I may take into account trying to jump in, say South Africa, with a USPA membership--don't know how far that will take me outside the U.S. I realize it's not Europe and may therefore be more lenient, but in short, I don't know what I don't know. All thoughts appreciated...:)

I can answer for south africa. USPA should be fine with a quick gear check/logbook check. Weekend jumping only, but plenty of spots to do so.

Africa jumpin, you are going to battle. Moz, you will find SA people taking a plane there for some beach jumps, but that only happens on occation.
You have the right to your opinion, and I have the right to tell you how Fu***** stupid it is.

There is active and safe jumping in Zimbabwe and if you need contact details I can put you in touch. Planes vary between 182 and Casa 212 on occasion.

I'd suggest stocking up on key spares before leaving the states (including freebag, cutaway handle, reserve ripcord etc). You aren't going to get a next day delivery on those items.

Make sure you are a licensed jumper, it's much easier for people to assess you with a license and a well filled out logbook.

Try Kenya. There is a club near Nairobi. A guy named Harro Trempeneau, a canadian jumper is the person to contact. Maybe thru the Canadian embassy up there. But being in Mozambique, the nearest for you is South Africa. I have jumped with people from up there, they are cool.
Learn from others mistakes, you will never live long enough to make them all.
