New account to purchase gear...have some questions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,
I found this site and have been reading posts and info off and on for about 4 months now. Theres a lot of really good stuff going on here. Anyway, I saw a main that I'm interested in so I finally started an account. The concerns I have is for scams upon purchasing...what are the safe and standard methods to paying private sellers and recieving the shipments. Also, is there any insurance that you will get what you paid for?

Paypal is about the safest way to pay unless you can pay them directly with a credit card (as in through a DZ). The absolute best way would be to have it shipped to your rigger and pay upon inspection if the seller is ok with that.
In every man's life he will be allotted one good woman and one good dog. That's all you get, so appreciate them while the time you have with them lasts.

Read the "Scam" links. There's a new fake" for sale" ad scam out there.
Read the scam forum.

Insist on an independent inspection prior to purchase. It's pretty standard to ask for that.

Chutingstar (among others) offer an escrow service in addition to inspection. The seller sends the gear to Chutingstar, it gets inspected, you get a green light on the purchase and send the money, the seller tells Chutingstar that the funds have arrived and then sends you the item. Again, pretty standard.
Search "rigger as escrow" for a lot more info.

I looked around the Chutingstar site. They have a lot of articles on buying gear and escrow, but the site is being changed and I can't find them.

is it common for sellers to allow the riggers at your DZ to act as a broker as well?

It depends. This sport is pretty small (read the "Degrees of Seperation in Skydiving" thread over in the Bonfire to get an idea).
The chances of a seller knowing someone who knows your rigger are pretty good. The chances of the seller knowing someone who knows the DZO are also pretty good.

You simply have to find someone that both parties trust to fairly broker the deal.
It usually isn't that hard to do.
