dontlikemustard 0 #1 May 16, 2012 my last jump at the dz turned out to be a hard opening... now anytime I go into an arch position, my lower back hurts and it doesn't seem to be getting better.... (sitting 8 hours a day at work does not help either) I really want to go back to the DZ this weekend I already skipped last week because of my back. anyone who's had this problem... what do you recommend? chiropractor? orthopedic? physical therapist? Never had previous back injuries or anything, this kinda blows..
ghost47 18 #2 May 16, 2012 Someone who can do an x-ray of the area with the pain, and make sure nothing is broken. I suffered a compression fracture on a vertebra from a hard opening -- had I not had an x-ray done (followed by an MRI when the doc didn't like how the x-ray looked), I might never have known. Jumping before it stabilized would have been colossally stupid. The sky will always be there. Get medical advice and clearance. Hopefully it's nothing but some tweaked muscles. skybytch 273 #3 May 16, 2012 Go get an xray. Don't jump again until you know what is going on in there.

BillyVance 34 #5 May 16, 2012 QuoteGo get an xray. Don't jump again until you know what is going on in there. Yeah, if my dad had done that after body surfing a wave at the beach flipped him and drove his face into the sand some 30 years ago, he would not have that gnarly knot and crook in his spine, as well as arthritis. He had the x-ray done years later after his doc noticed something didn't look right during a physical. Too late to do anything about it. dontlikemustard 0 #7 May 16, 2012 QuoteFirst I'd get a second opinion from MountainBiking.com or some other outdoor type web forum. lol thanks for the tip, but if you haven't noticed in my post I am actually asking what kind of medical professional I should visit for this issue. Not asking for advice on how to fix it. I have heard absolute horror stories from chiropractors... yet just about everyone recommends them. I called a few places and they were already signing me up or multiple visits before they even knew what my problem is.

I went to a chiropractor last year, 24 treatments was what they signed me up for....naively I accepted (private healthcare was paying)...now a year down the line my back is in a worse state than it was when I first went to them, along the way I kept telling them it was getting worse, their stock answer was 'keep coming back and we'll fix it'. I wish now I hadn't even started. I'd recommend x-ray, then see what the doc says. If he recommends physio take it. I wish that's what I had done. And somehow this is supposed to make me feel better about the logic of asking people who don't know you and have never seen you about what kind of medical professional you should go see? For the record, there are probably as many medical Dr. horror stories as there are chiropractic horror stories. There are incompetent people everywhere. BTW, I think you should try a touch of accupuncture with a bit of Native American witch Dr. thrown in for good measure.

Back to square 1 again which isn't good. should probably practise what I preach and book myself in for x-rays.

This is a discussion forum, where we talk about our past experiences and help each other out if we have questions. Its the internet, and while we should take everything we read with a grain of salt, it doesn't hurt to ask other skydivers who have probably suffered similar injuries. If my post bothers you, or if you find it stupid, you can just ignore it and go on with your life. You make some rather good and intelligent points, you don't have to come across as a dick while doing it.

PiLFy 3 #17 May 16, 2012 Hi, I do like mustard. I'm sorry about your back. As a number of serious replies here have already said. Go get checked out BEFORE you jump again. You could do serious damage, otherwise. You should see either a Physiatrist, or an Orthopaedist. I would chose a Physiatrist. I know it's frustrating as Hell for you, but don't be stupid. The sky really isn't going anywhere. Good Luck.
ridestrong 1 #18 May 16, 2012 A spine specialist might advise you to rest and avoid any strenuous or impact activities over the next few weeks or until symptoms resolve. They might also tell you that heat/ice and ibuprofen may help..... if symptoms persist or get worse x-rays or other imaging may be necessary. Either way you should refer to your PCP (primary care physician/provider).*I am not afraid of dying...
