tmarine253 0 #10 December 25, 2010 I love the description on slickdeals, "wave at passing birds." Haha. But seriously do any DZ's actually charge 280-350 for a tandem? And another serious question. How come the disclaimer it says max male weight is 270 and max female weight is 220, does it really make a difference?

PiLFy 3 #14 December 26, 2010 "And another serious question. How come the disclaimer it says max male weight is 270 and max female weight is 220, does it really make a difference?" I'm not defending the thievery of this outfit. However, there is a valid reason behind the different weights. Muscle is more dense than fat. Men have more of it, & more bone mass to boot. Ergo, a 220# female tub = a 270# male tub. They'll be about the same liability in the air (i.e.: unable to lift legs high enough for landing, problems w/arching, etc...). MakeItHappen 15 #17 March 6, 2011 QuoteSportations just started another Tandem deal throgu Groupon in the Tampa Bay area. $119 tandem jumps at Chalet Suzanne, just great. That is the third Groupon tandem deal in Tampa area in 6 months. Talk about polluting the market These deals seem too good to be true. They certainly appear to be unsustainable in the long run. There is something that vendors using Groupons need to know. This is explained on Groupons website Terms Para 3 at bottom Quote According to applicable law, the Merchant may be responsible for allowing you to redeem your Voucher for the cash value based on the money you actually paid for your Voucher (i.e. if you paid $20 for a Voucher which gives you $50 of value to the Merchant, the cash value that you paid is $20, not $50), for a period of time that extends beyond the expiration date on the Voucher. While the expiration date on the Voucher dictates the last date that you can use your Voucher at Merchant for the promotional offer stated on the Groupon, applicable law may provide that the Merchant is responsible for honoring the cash value that you paid for your Voucher for a period of time beyond the expiration date stated on the Voucher. In other words, you should be allowed to redeem the cash value (or purchase price) of your Voucher up until the greater of: (1) the Voucher’s expiration date; or (2) the minimum length of time allowed by applicable law for a Voucher to expire. In the event that you have an expired Voucher and would like to redeem it for the price you paid to acquire it, please contact the Merchant. Once again, the Merchant should allow such redemption if applicable law requires it, and we have instructed the Merchant to do so. If you have gone to the Merchant and the Merchant has refused to redeem the cash value of your expired Voucher, and if applicable law entitles you to such redemption, then please contact Groupon [and explain your situation in writing] and Groupon will refund the purchase price of the Voucher in either U.S. Dollars or credit for purchases of future Vouchers from Groupon (presently known as “Gs”). Applicable law includes and is not limited to 2009 Credit Card Act that says this about gift cards (and Groupons are gift cards) "Prohibits retailers from setting expiration dates less than 5 years after the card is purchased." Say you or a customer buys a Groupon and pays $125 for a $250 tandem with an expiration date 1 year from the deal date. The customer comes in after the expiration date. The vendor MUST honor the amount paid by the customer, in cash if he wants it, for a time period up to 5 years from date of purchase. The vendor must honor the 'deal' up until the expiration date. IOW, you might be paying a Groupon customer the cash value of what he paid for it 5 years after the purchase. That means the vendor loses. Cash value - Groupon take - 3rd party take =~ 60-70% of the cash value (if that). You'd be paying out $125 when you only took in ~$85. .. davelepka 4 #24 March 15, 2011 That thread is a hoot, but what's not a hoot is the 1457 people who bought tandems through the deal. This is for a DZ that is flying a Cessna of some sort, and can expect to turn about 4 tandems an hour, so they'll need 365 hours of non-stop flying to service all those customers. Even if you generously give them 12 hours of jumping per day, that's 30 days of solid jumping to service all those customers. Factor in weather, and people who can only jump weekends, there is going to be a long, long, long waiting list for those tandems. On top of it all, to the best of our knowledge, Groupon sucks up close to half of the purchase price, and then add in what ever 'Sportations' is going to get, what does the DZ end up with? What they end up with is a months-long waiting list of pre-paid people wanting to jump at a price the DZ is going to either be losing money on, or best-case-scenario, just breaking even. What are the odds this DZ can survive the season? I guess they could limit the number of Groupon customers they'll schedule on any one day, leaving slots open for full price customers, but even if they only fill half of the slots with Groupon customers, that half will eat into the profits of the full price customers such that the DZ is working for half price at the end of the day. It's sad.
