Backsliding up-wind/down the Jump path.....

I had a group RW jump the other day and was trying out a different jumpsuit for speed control. It was a loaner freefly suit which had a lot of material around the ankles.

I exited with the intent of meeting the two-way that exited with me. I located the group almost immediately and started to "drive" towards them. I felt positive pressure on my legs and felt as though I was driving forward....but...I wasn't. A senior, much more experienced jumper with me said I backslid the whole time and it took all he had to catch up to me before he attempted to signal "legs out".:o. BTW....He said he saw the freefly group that exited after us just behind me

The question....does excess material on the legs create a "false-positive" feeling of pressure which would lead you to think you are doing everything right in driving forward? I don't have a history of excessive backsliding and did 2 more jumps after(with two other suits) and watched the ground for movement on my part and there was no noticeable sliding:S.

Any thoughts....?

You won't be able to tell from watching the ground. You'll be drifting over the ground at about the same speed as the wind is blowing. And even that is hard to detect.

Backsliding is a very common problem at your jumps numbers up until abotu 100 jumps. I dont' know why but that is about where people lock in a little more. Be aware of it an be prepared to compensate for it. You'll be fine.
