johnf35242 0 #1 September 29, 2005 I am trying finding smoke to jump with. anyone know where a good place to purchase it is?? also it doesn't seeem to be used as much as it used to be, any reason why??
councilman24 37 #2 September 29, 2005 If your profile is up to date you need some more experience before you jump smoke. But, Paragear is the easiest. New shipping regulations and regulations on military type smoke have made it harder to get and use. Also, nobody wants to stain/burn their $4000 rig these days. Stains and burns from sparks are common and expected when jumping smoke, especially military type smoke in freefall. Haven't done any smoke jumps in awhile but the last few I did were with teathered smoke deployed under canopy. No details on technique so you get compitent instruction when your ready.I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
Spizzzarko 0 #3 September 29, 2005 Get a box of baking soda or a bag or flower. Just don't drop it...
goose491 0 #4 September 29, 2005 Might find some good sources here... but I really don't recommend jumping this way. I second what spizzarko says. Use a can of flour or something. Looks good with no risk of burning or melting something important. Nick My Karma ran over my Dogma!!!
YahooLV 0 #5 September 30, 2005 Paragear...when you're ready. I use smoke at least twice a month....sometimes more. Also, you need a hazmat cert. to get it, I think. ( might be mistaken)http://www.curtisglennphotography.com
chuteless 1 #6 September 30, 2005 I believe there is a formula for making your own smoke somewhere on the internet. I forget the title, but chase the usual things ( smoke bombs etc) and you'll likely find it. Detonation may prove challenging, but Im sure it can be accomplished. DJL 235 #7 September 30, 2005 I have a bunch of this stuff that I'm building a bracket for. It burns cool enough to pick up with your hand but it has to be lit when you're already under canopy. The contraption I'm putting together will allow me to burn three at a time thus enabling a billowing cloud under canopy."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Go to a plumbing supply house and you can get the small ones for under $2.00 each. Good luck trying to light the fuse under canopy. DJL 235 #9 September 30, 2005 I have a butane torch lighter that will light a cigerette held out a car window. Worked fine at 45mph. Works GREAT for crack pipes."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
YahooLV 0 #10 September 30, 2005 yeah, my g'damn match keeps going out! (hmmm, maybe, if I stalled the canopy, reached down , lit it, then started flying again!) Yeah, that's the ticket! carry on!http://www.curtisglennphotography.com
pyromelon 0 #11 September 25, 2011 As a full time pyrotechnist with 25 years of experience with the last 12 making smoke full time, I would STRONGLY encourage you to NOT NOT NOT jump with any homemade pyro device, including a smoke. WAY too much can go wrong and I'm guessing that "wrong" would be VERY inconvenient while your thousand of feet off the ground. PLEASE DON'T!
