What will 300 grocery bags jumped out of a balloon do?

So, how did one riser get chopped ? It looked OK in the exit shot.

Look at THIS picture. See where the cut-away cable is routed?

I don't ;)

ETA: You can actually see the 3-rings starting to release in that photo.

Already planning on 400 bags next month, and possibly landing it.

Question I have for all the riggers/engineers: Should I have 5 foot lines off each bag handle going to a 15' line to rapide link or 15' line off each handle coming down to a 5' line to the link. It's which will tangle least?

I'm not a rigger, but I would expect the 15' lines to be better as they would allow the lines to spread out more (bags get more air space)... kinda like loosening your chest strap lets your canopy open up more.

But, like I said, I'm not a rigger and don't know what would have less chance tangling up.

A little nervous? Forget your goggles?;)

Looks like great fun. B|

Might work up your cutaway system with housings. At least soft ones. They could go under the mud flaps to keep them out of the way. The other alternative I've used is two point three ring with the cables on each riser. But that was for open canopies. Not streamering plastic bags.

You need a go pro or similar mounted somewhere so we can see the bags inflate etc.

Well done. you said you may land the next time with more bags. You had better have a good spot in that location, plenty of hazards around.

Yes we found the cut away bags. So, I have finished the first line attachments to 400 bags and will start attaching to risers next week. I've decided not to rush the next jump as I want better video and photography. I will be landing in a lake(lake Norman) so its been kind of a pain in the ass trying to work out the logistics. The area lies underneath Class B airspace so no higher than 3500' exit. So it will be lots of quick decisions. I am also trying to figure out how to make this benefit a charity in the area. But not many organizations want to touch it.

More than likely it will be next May.

I did 50 bags with 20 lbs suspended and it hit the ground at a survivable speed. This was from a 100' building. 400 bags with my suspended weight of 165 should be close.

As for when the next jump is, I am just about done with the rigging of 400 bags but because I am going to try and make this into a charity fund raiser at the Lake, it is probably going to be in mid/late May. You never know, I may get a wild hair and throw on a wetsuit and just do it.

What was kinda interesting on the test drops was that the bags left a 6" or so gap around themselves. They opened very uniformly and once I got the weight to bag ratio acceptable, they all spread apart. Apparently they self adjust and keep a small gap between them to spill air out. So no bag really touched another bag. It also had the effect, I think, of giving a larger sq. ft. area.
