livnbored 0 #1 August 23, 2011 I got a strange email from someone in uspa saying there is an uncashed cheque in my name for $15 from 2006. Then it gives me some options of what to do according to law in Virginia. The problem is, in 2006 I didn't have a uspa membership, nor did I submit anything to uspa that year, I think. I tried to get on the website to see if this person is who they say, but the website isn't working. Anyone know anything?
AggieDave 6 #2 August 23, 2011 It works for me: http://www.uspa.org/--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
cpoxon 0 #3 August 23, 2011 Did you click on the link in the email to get to the website or did you type uspa.org into your browser yourself? Did the link look strange or malformed? What was the name of the person in the email? This sounds a bit like a advance-fee fraud although using USPA is pretty specific and scamming someone over $15 doesn't sound very successfull.Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
JohnRich 4 #4 August 23, 2011 They're either trying to run a scam on you with a fraudulent check, or else they're "phishing" for personal information like your bank account number, so that they can steal your money that way. People send me these things all the time, pretending to be someone, and using all the legitimate logos which they've copied from official screen images. But since they're uneducated crooks from foreign countries, they often make simple spelling and grammar mistakes. Don't go there.
topdocker 0 #5 August 23, 2011 I did just receive a legitimate email from USPA HQ regarding an uncashed check form last year. They merely wanted to know if I had the check still, wanted a new one, and where to send it. Under no circumstances would they ask for routing numbers or account information. Phishing expedition! topJump more, post less!
livnbored 0 #6 August 24, 2011 I spoke with USPA and found out I actually was sent a cheque in 2006 (which I never got.) The email was legit. So I just told them to donate it to USPA. It was for a contribution I made to parachutist. Guess the accounts department is doing some house cleaning. Still don't know why the website (which I typed in myself that night) wasn't working for me.
