Ankle Braces & injury recovery??

Recommended Posts

Quote

He was concerned at one point if he was going to have to do another surgery because my ankle looked a little too wide and it would cause arthritis.

I did have two "temporary" screws put in across my ankle and found out afterwards that they were to keep my tibia and fibula from spreading out. I guess the ligament that is supposed to do this was damaged. That might be what your doc was talking about.

I think that's what I remember. I didn't do any ligament damage, but I remember him saying something about a ligament when talking about that surgery.

Okay so question......when you get the hardware out, do you have to wear a cast again? Are you able to weightbear and all of that?
I'm so funny I crack my head open!

Everyone is different, and it also kind of depends what kind of hardware is removed. (Plates, screws, rods or pins?) I had my "temp" screws out 5 months after I broke my ankle (should have really been done a little earlier- I walked on them for 3 months!) and begged my doc to take out two others that really hurt and were affecting my walking. It was day surgery, I left the hospital on crutches (no cast, just a surgical dressing) but was walking without them a day and a half later. I think if he hadn't removed the screws from my tibia, I would have been walking right away. Of course, other people's experiences are different!

I still have a plate and screws in my fibula, and part of me really wants it out, but I'm not sure its bothering me enough to justify another surgery. Unlike some people, its NOT visible, nor are the screw heads but I do feel it sometimes.

Time to bump it up again -

PT is over, I still excercise the ankle - I'll be hitting the gym instead of going to PT.
(Time to get serious about some fat-burning cardio - I gained about 10 pounds while convalescing, and was a bit bigger in the waist than I'd like to be to start with.)

There's one screw holding the tib and fib together that the sawbones wants to talk to about, debating wether or not to take it out.

I've been back to work about a month now, and being on my feet alot is getting easier.
The ankle is stiff in the AM, but limbers up fairly quickly. I'm able to bound up and down the stairs and climb ladders without much discomfort at all.

I sent my rig in for assembly, and my "new" (upsized) canopy is at PD getting an overhaul and clean bill of health. So my first jump back will be in a brandy-new rig and a bigger canopy. The canopy is the same type (Spectre) , but a 170 vs. a 150.

I plan on making that first jump on Safety Day, weather permitting.

I've been to the DZ a couple times, and went out to the "scene of the crime" - Just a bunch of grass.

I get nervous when I think about that first jump back- But I feel I gotta get back on the horse. Some of the students I coached last fall are looking forward to jumping with me again. I love it!!

Thanks for the update. Hope all continues to go well with you. I know what you mean about it being still in the AM, til it loosens up. When we meet, we shall do an ankle club jump. :)

I think we're referred to as "Heavy Metal Skydivers" but titanium isn't really heavy. Hrm....:P Anyhoo, i've always wanted to put together a hardware jump at WFFC or something. To be part of it, you gotta have hardware resulting from a skydiving injury. It's the club you wish you weren't part of. :)

Well, weather permitting tomorrow is the Big Day.

I've got my Spectre 170 back from PD with a new set of lines and a clean bill of health-

My rig has a fresh repack and will be waiting at the club for me in the AM.

I have a brand-new McDavid level III brace. (Recommended my my physical therepist-)

Prolly just a hop-n-pop, but just the same -

I'm really looking forward to it!

Here we go!

I try to hike every week on top of occasional diving and and I'm pretty sure I have really messed up the right top half of my ankle. It really feels like a grinding annoyance, yet it's painful. My hiking partner who joins me on about half of my miles, wears a brace but doesn't remember where he got it. I need some advice on a good brace. I have come across a website that sells ankle support but I would like a review before I look into it further. If anyone has used them, please let me know! Thanks!
