mr2mk1g 10 #1 July 5, 2011 So, long after qualifying as a skydiving instructor and years after I started teaching both internal and external seminars at work for clients and employees alike, I'm now going on an "advanced presentation skills course" for work. Oh well, always up to learn something new. Part of the brief is that I deliver two seminars during the course of the day. One is on a work topic and I can use powerpoint (so I'll just do one of my lectures I've delivered hundreds of times over the past few years) and the other one has to "take no longer than 7 minutes and be on the subject of your hobby or an interest you have. You may use a visual aid if you wish but it must NOT be a PowerPoint presentation". So... any ideas? I can't just teach an element of a first jump course as they're all either physical or on powerpoint (we'll all be in suits in an office meeting room so I'm not getting people jumping round counting 1-1000, 2-1000 etc, funny as that would be). Likewise I'm not rolling round on the ground sweating my arse off showing them how to pack a parachute.
piisfish 140 #2 July 5, 2011 make them PLF from the desks, and then static-line them out of the window That's all I got for nowP.S. oh yeah, change hobby / interest scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
DSE 5 #3 July 5, 2011 You could: ~demonstrate the transition from horizontal to vertical at exit. ~Demonstrate how a parachute's deployment stages function. ~Teach the difference between a wingsuit jump (converting downward speed into forward speed) ~Teach emergency Procedures (you could easily have them looking/pulling/looking...) ~Talk about exit orders and why they occur the way they do ~Talk about the various disciplines of skydiving, and how/why you got into the sport/your favorite discipline ~Simply show the gear (alti, gloves, goggles, helmet, jumpsuit, rig) Put it on someone and do a gear check and talk about your experiences as an instructor. peek 21 #4 July 5, 2011 QuoteYou could: ~Simply show the gear (alti, gloves, goggles, helmet, jumpsuit, rig) Put it on someone and do a gear check and talk about your experiences as an instructor. I vote for that one. 7 minutes would work really well. and the audience will probably be fascinated by the gear, e.g., finding out that there are 2 parachutes in that little container, finding out that you throw out the pilot chute, etc. If you find your presentation is 2 minutes too fast, you have a backup. Pull the pilot chute and pin, and deploy the main. Pull it all the way out and fluff it up. parachutes look really big in a room. The only disadvantage is lugging the gear around, and packing. Abedy 0 #7 July 5, 2011 Quote ~Talk about exit orders and why they occur the way they do Woohoo. Should work for a 7min lecture with whuffos, but imagine you'd do it with skydivers Quote ~Simply show the gear (alti, gloves, goggles, helmet, jumpsuit, rig) Put it on someone and do a gear check and talk about your experiences as an instructor. I'd take this topic. Should be very interesting to whuffos and hey, the gear stuff is all visual aids, huh? The sky is not the limit. The ground is. When we would book lecture halls to do on-campus presentations for my university's skydiving club these two topics were usually what we'd talk about. They're both informative and accessible. This is what I choose, too. I have a short 2.5 min reel of various disciplines, it's good for showing the concepts. Carrying a rig/Alti is pretty simple, and can be repacked any time. We've provided this for the whuffos who help at the WFFC every year before the event begins. One guy in a parachute, the other pulling it out, and explaining. It is fascinating every single time, and nobody EVER walks out on the talk, even tho they can.skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com

quade 4 #12 July 6, 2011 I'm going to suggest something radical, so just think about it for a few minutes. Think about the impression you could make on people (co-workers and other management types in attendance) by not giving them a lecture about skydiving, but rather business lessons you've learned as a result of your skydiving experiences, team work, risk management, trust and maybe even having to give somebody "the bowling speech."quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
