airtwardo 7 #26 February 24, 2011 Quote Quote Quote FYI - the RV-8 is far from an ultralight. It's a 200+mph aircraft that's actually fairly sophisticated. The 'experimental' category just means that it's not a certified airplane, and can't be flown commercially for hire. Some in the category may actually be 'experimental', but most, like the RV-8, are proven designs that have been around for years. http://www.vansaircraft.com/public/rv-8int.htm Yup...I've seen some that would put almost any commercially manufactured aircraft to shame, and as long as they are flown within design parameters and maintained well they certainly ARE the future of avataion...affordable fun and transportation so to speak. That being said, I've also seen a few 'projects' that I was tempted to break into the hangar and take an ax to...in the interest of saving lives! misunderstood the term then dave.. looks like it climbs like 8 times faster than our skydiver-carrier.. twardo, kinda reminds me of that video of a guy flying with his homebuilt helicopter, with no ratings.. cant seem to find it now tough. 25 years ago I did some high speed taxi and 'short' hop testing on a guy's home-built Gyro-Copter, it was a fairly stable platform but I refused to take it any higher than 10 feet or father than about 50 yards...just on general principals, I didn't build it & not gotta take his 'word' everything was good. The owner was killed taking off with it less than a year later...it had a total time of 2.6 hours on the tach, 2 hours of which I had put on. He didn't get SOMETHING right. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
virgin-burner 1 #27 February 24, 2011 now you know why i have a profound fear of anything that's airborne, except it's made of nylon and strings, and birds, of course.. sad story, really..“Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. GTYS 0 #28 February 24, 2011 I'm amazed by how skydivers will jump out of an airplane. But think I'm nuts for building one. As a skydiver you are responsible for all your actions, it's no difference with building you own airplane, it's your ass on the line!

A bunch of years ago, some guys ran a business that sold parachute kits. They sent you all the parts and the instructions how to put it together. At least with the home built parachute, you still had a reserve. I would have to know the builder of the home built plane to be a very meticulus and detail oriented person before I flew in one.
