DSE 5 #26 February 15, 2011 Quote in retrospect, putting up this thread was dumb of me and makes me look bad. Is there any way I can have the thread removed. I do appreciate everybodys' posts and advice, but this thread makes me look like a overanxious worrywart. It doesn't make you look dumb, you're simply expressing some of the same things that others have gone through. People look forward to seeing your smile at the DZ. You have some of the best instructors out there on your side. If you're gonna look at the young hotness that's on the DZ, then be sure to look at the older crowd too, because it's about equally divided.... See ya this weekend!! Scrumpot 1 #33 February 15, 2011 Quote For those of you who are were married, have relationships, etc., did you find it hard to keep at skydiving, esp if your SO, family, friends, thought what you did was crazy and stupid and didn't want to hear about it? Yes, so I cut that B* away, and found a new one, who did not give anywhere even near the level of grief over it (and she is a whuffo too ...well, one tandem & decided it was not for her) all. If your SO truly loves you, and you in all other ways maintain your balance and RESPECT in your relationship, your interests, hobbies, etc. really SHOULD NOT MATTER. Some will use it as an excuse to "mask" their other issues. My 1st wife I had when I started jumping for instance, used to give me a TON of grief whenever I wanted to go out to play a round of golf. Then, when I took up skydiving - tried to tell me she was gonna buy me a country club membership. - B.S.! If your relationship is good, and you truly do love and respect each other and trust one another - it really SHOULD NOT matter. ...Although I do appreciate and am sensitive to that, sometimes it does. A lot can depend too, on how overly "obsessed" or not as well, you become with it. - If the S/O doesn't want to see all skydiving videos and hear jump stories incessantly at every turn, simply respect that is all, and don't inundate him/her with them. Make sure between you, that you still share at least some other mutual interests, and continue to also pay attention to those as well. In short, if your relationship is good, and you do truly already have mutual respect between you, it really should not matter, or become an issue. A lot will depend on how YOU approach it. For those that have intractable S/O's, well - chances are, that they would probably just at some point find something else to become intractable about anyway. Skydiving in a split skydiver/whuffo relationship becomes just an easy scapegoat excuse in those cases, of convenience is all. - That's the way it was for me anyway. skymama 37 #34 February 15, 2011 I also want to chime in that there are all sorts of people who skydive and don't fit the "young, cute and limber" classification. Hell, I'm 7 years older than you and I can only touch my toes on a good day! Being introverted may make it more difficult for you to get on jumps if you are too timid to say, "hey, can I jump with you"? You will get rejected sometimes but you have to remember that it's probably not you, it's probably just the fact that people just want to jump with certain friends or that a dive plan has already been established. Many people go to the dz with a limited amount of funds and they want to make the most out of their 3 jumps and only do specific things. That said, there are plenty of others who like to jump with newbies and help them learn new skills, you just have to find them. I'm always happy to jump with newbies because I had so many people help me when I first started, I like to pay it forward. As for getting your husband to accept you skydiving, that might be more difficult. There have been many threads about that, you can do a search and find helpful information. I ain't saying nuthin', I'm on my second divorce with whuffos. I'm done with 'em. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
robinheid 0 #35 February 15, 2011 Quote I guess I was referring more to the "social" aspect of the sport. Not being "good on the eyes" might not help me be social. I'll use an example. For many years, I was in involved in the SCA (its a medieval reenactment society). Then just bring your swords and armor to the DZ. That'll definitely break the ice (almost all skydivers love cold steel), and the blade will be useful around the firepit too. SCR-6933 / SCS-3463 / D-5533 / BASE 44 / CCS-37 / 82d Airborne (Ret.) guineapiggie101 0 #40 February 15, 2011 Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. You've made me laugh. Too bad I'm not a drinker :( , heh heh! (I'm not a prude either though). I look forward to jumping again later this week, or this weekend (hopefully it doesn't rain). BTW, this is not how I usually am. I'm more shy and reserved in public, vs over a computer screen. That is part of my fencing garb, although I wasn't wearing a doublet at the time. I have lots of garb.

VanillaSkyGirl 6 #46 February 15, 2011 Quote Quote I can just imagine myself dressed in ren garb and showing up at the DZ. Actually, that wouldn't be terribly unusual. I actually think that your costume looked really cool, Ms. GP101! Perhaps, during times when you aren't jumping, you could find a way to bring up your SCA involvement. There are some jumpers (although I'm not sure if they are at SD Elsinore), who are definitely into that kind of thing. You'd be surprised at how another common past-time of yours could be a way to create another bond. In any case, the actual fact that we all jump out of planes creates a huge enough bond amongst all of us! As for looks, just worry about becoming a skydiver, first. Your looks cannot help or hurt you there. That is really all that matters to new jumpers, when socializing. The unity in our sport is about our love of the sky first, and everything else comes second. Personally, I've never thought that the people at the DZ are better-looking than the people whom I know, outside of the DZ, but skydivers' personalities, flying, skills, etc. is what makes the attractive in my eyes. Oh, and exactly how "short" are you, GP101? I am a pretty small lady...about 5 ft. tall. It's not so bad. Have you ever seen this quote: "I'm not short. I'm fun-sized." It really suits you, perfectly. I used to be a costume designer, so I truly enjoy looking at period or historically-accurate costumes. I sent you a message. You must be using modified gear at your size. If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to contact me. It's very different being tiny/short and trying to skydive. We have to shop around a bit to find gear that works for us, but it's so worth it in the end. Plus, you can be as awesome a skydiver as anyone else. Believe it! Welcome to the skies, my dear sky sister!
Ron 10 #50 February 15, 2011 Quote I can just imagine myself dressed in ren/fencing garb and showing up at the DZ. You would be surprised. Bring two sets and start fencing with random people.... You will have people lining up to talk to you. I used to take my radio controlled helicopter to the DZ (OK, I lived on the DZ... But still) and people loved to watch it. Anything that sets you apart, will draw a crowd.... Yes, I know what that says. Quote (sorry for posting non skydiving pics) This statement shows you are new here ..... No one is gonna care.
