What's a student?

Recommended Posts

Some people classify anyone who isn't cleared for self supervision (IE they must have an instructor with them or assisting them) a student and refer to an unlicensed jumper as a novice.

Some people consider an unlicensed jumper a student.

Think of the question as:
Who do You consider a 'student'
and what does it mean?

What do I as a Student can expect? (as what do they Pro think of me)

Me.

Anyone engaged in the process of learning.
Students can teach too, y'know?
I learn wingsuit tricks from a lot of people, but I teach more people than I learn from.
I know nothing about CRW, but currently undergoing CRW training from a couple guys here in S'nore.
I don't think there is a box to put "students" in.

Although you hopefully never stop learning, when I say skydiving student, I specifically mean someone in the training program. Then there's the gap between the AFF or S/L graduation jump and the A license. I refer to those folks as novices.

Once they have an A license, I might say "lower experience level jumper" when asking a really experienced jumper to join me on a jump with a sub-hundred jumper.

:oJumping that camera setup as a student?? :D:D

We're all students, no matter how much you know, someone knows something else that you don't.

Everybody! There is no one who has experienced every type of malfunction, aircraft emergency, canopy landing problem, or experienced all aircraft diffences. Always learn from the people around you and use common sense to keep safe!

That's right. You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can't possibly make them all yourself. And live.

Anyone that is still learning. With 3,000 plus skydives, I'm still learning.

+1

None of us know it all, in skydiving or life in general. If you don't learn something new everyday you are just taking up space.

You're on your way to being an expert skydiver.:D

Yes, you're right, good looking women get treated very nicely in our sport . . . and in life. You and I just gotta deal with it. :P:)

I'm a student. I'll call myself that until I get A license.

I have 25 years in the sport and nearly 5000 jumps.
I hope I'm always a student.
I hope I always have a "beginner's mind".

What's a student?

Effective the 18th, ME!! :happydance:

Seriously, though? I am a leader in the Army. Have been for a few years. But I always make myself available to new ideas and guidance, even from my soldiers. I'm pretty sure that will transfer to my skydiving, regardless of how many jumps I have.
Sincerely,
Kevin

As used at my DZ everyone who is not yet A licensed, or A license qualified is termed a "student".

Many DZs stopped referring to tandem students as passengers for tax reasons. Amusement rides most certainly should be paying state sales tax, while student training jumps may not. Again for tax reasons, all of us who are earning money from our skydiving are students when it comes tax time. All of those so called "fun jumps" are actually training jumps/re-currency jumps, working toward another rating, etc., therefore tax deductible!
Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else.
