Ah, gotcha...and that is of course correct!!

Excellent advice on visiting multiple dropzones too!

I'll also add that I have learned a LOT on the days we couldn't jump.
Anything from safety discussions, gear discussions, attitude/behavior discussions, and alcohol limits and reactions as well. ;)
Stupid skydiver tricks are always fun too. Until the police and/or fire department show up anyway!

CrossKeys is having Freezefest this weekend. Youc ould go down there and jump.

I believe both there and the Ranch jump on weekends all year long when the weather is amenable. Nothing like jumping to learn.

and a POV view of what a student landing should be.

Except for the fact that a POV video is useless for training students. You can't see the hand/arm position, nor the body position (remember to prepare for a PLF or you could break your leg), and these are the key features a student would need to see in order to learn properly.

A much better training aid would be an aerial photo of the DZ and surrounding area where you could outline the wind direction, sopt, opening area, hold area, and landing pattern. Follow that up with an OUTSIDE video of an experienced jumper flying a student canopy and making a student landing. The outside angle allows the student to see the hand/arm position, bondy position, the way canopy reacts to inputs, and how the pilot should hit the ground.

just maybe...to get more people to stay in the sport it wouldn't hurt if there were some sort of sticky which had vidoes like this and others

Ok, now let's be honest with ourselves. Just because you are stuck in the cold and bored, jonesing for anything to do with jumping, this idea is rediculous. Skydiving has been around for 50-some years, and went through it's biggest 'growth spurt' (post 'Point Break') all without the benefit of the internet, DZ.com, or 'stickys' of any kind.

You're grasping at straws trying to keep your end of the argument afloat, and it's not working. Do youself a favor ala Leo Dicaprio at the end of Titanic, and let it slip peacefully underwater and die. This is starting to turn into the old, 'ask a question and then argue with the answers becuase they're not what you want to hear', and those generally don't end well. Give it a rest while everyone still likes you and understands you're just enthusiastic and suffering from cabin fever.

We were all there at one time or another, but most of us with a few years under our belts were there before the internet provided us with a way to communicate all the dumb shit ideas we came up with.

Also there was a comment about packing and wear on the chute, if done properly does this really cause wear to the equipment??? I dont think it would.

I made that comment. I am a relative noob too so take my advice with however many grains of salt you wish. Packing does put some wear and tear on your parachute. As far as I can tell the biggest reason for the wear and tear is the sweat from where you lay down on the center cell. That is a good reason not to pack shirtless in the summer.

A few pack jobs is not going to put lots of wear and tear on your canopy. If you are indoors at a comfortable temperature then perhaps none at all. The practic you get packing is likely more than worth the very small amount of wear and tear it would involve. I jump all year round (less in winter) and am just packing when I jump. Also, I don't personally have a good open hallway in my house, I would have to go down and use the basement if I wanted to pack. Maybe if it was more convenient I would practice there too.

Shah one suggestion that you haven't given is that there is nothing like "lurking" at the dz to learn. .

But things become a pissing match real quick.
The above videos were perfect. Perhaps the best I have ever seen.
Maybe...just maybe...to get more people to stay in the sport it wouldn't hurt if there were some sort of sticky which had vidoes like this and others showing what each level of an AFF should look like and a POV view of what a student landing should be.
And for someone with free time and a bit of skill there is a real market need for beginner books and videos.
But so far thank you. This has been very helpful.
I greatly appreciate it.

Not sure what you mean about the pissing match as I haven't really come across that at any dz I have been to.

I know you like the video's but pretty much every single experienced jumper has bashed them in this thread. Honestly if I am going to watch videos of freefall then there are fantastic tunnel training videos that are out there. http://www.skyleague.com/pages/news/showArticles.php?story=1414 At least you are being talked through what you should be doing by an experienced person.

I am not a very experienced jumper but POV video while entertaining is flawed. A big problem with new jumpers is often flairing to high, a wide-angle video camera is going to make the sight picture worse not better for this.

The only specific area where I think POV video might be helpful is with malfunctions. I am happy to be told that I am wrong on this - but I would rather get a sight picture of a main/reserve entanglement from someone else's experience!

Very well written article.

Sadly I will miss out on freeze fest and safety day...EMBA classes.

I agree with the POV video, it must be POV and view from the ground and a voice over.

HTH do you get into a pissing match sitting around learning???

I think Shah thought Nigel was talking about lurking dz.com as apposed to lurking at an actual dz. You can definitely get in a pissing match here.

Hey Shah, you could also check out some of the other drop zones near you this winter just to say hello, fill out your waivers and make some new contacts if it is too cold to jump. That way when the weather breaks you can hit the ground running. I see you have Skydive Sussex as your home dz. Sky's the Limit is less than an hour and a half from there and depending on where you call home may be closer to you. Good people there. You could also take a run up to the Ranch or down to Cross Keys. Make it a goal to visit more drop zones this year and by visiting them now you help alleviate any anxiety you may have of walking in to a drop zone as an unknown. When you are going to visit let people here know and maybe they can meet you and introduce you around.

Edited for spelling. Probably missed many others.

Yes sorry if it wasn't clear dz.com is entertaining but no substitute for the real thing.

Just to add the universal passport to a dz is a case of beer. Hanging out at the dz after hours allows people to get to know you and believe it or not there are people out there who really do give a shit and will take you under their wing.

...I wish there were a few good POV videos out there shot with people flying 1:1. And one of a ground view.
Would greatly help people learn what to "look" for.

Certainly not for everybody, but poor Shah - you are just so darn PERSISTENT! ;)

For you then, peruse a few of these links, and for yourself, have at ANY of 'em, and go from there:

Microsoft FlightSim add-on Module Downloads
ParaSim - THE #1 Canopy Flight Virtual Flight Simulator

Come on back when you are done with these, and let us know how it all works out. We'll get back to jumping and learning, and being patient with whatever each of us may have available, in a PRACTICAL (application / actual environment) progression opportunities are out there that work, and have worked for years; However, when otherwise suggested to you - you always seem so fired up to eschew.

Good luck to you in finding, and then choosing & utilizing whichever virtual method may be out there, you think for some reason instead - may be the holy grail of what will work for you.

Maybe the links will at least provide you now, with some interesting basis for further research on this? Have at it!

it's a bit sad that after a handful of posts of Shah contemplating learning to flare from TV no one has brought up learning to fuck from watching porn...

sorry, I couldn't find anything more useful to add :(

So far the two packing videos were exceptional.
The simulators? Who knows I'm sure they do something?
