What's "fun"?

Recommended Posts

Many people, including me, love solo hop and pops. What is not fun is having someone tell you what is not fun.

Jumping alone is NOT fun and is totally BORING so please avoid that.

That's odd. In this thread (post #23) you supported my expression of the opposite view:

http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4038758;search_string=boring;#4038758

I'll say here what I said in that thread: I simply cannot understand anyone with under 100 jumps considering any kind of parachute jump to be boring.

(If you are being facetious in this thread, please advise.)

the initial move, away from the aircraft...B|
it can vary from a free flown exit, to chunking,,, from flying away near the end of a stick, to camera slots both Front float and rear float. From pre-gripped in any number of slots... to chasing the very end of a group...B|;) EVEN a poised exit, on the step of a 182...absolutely FUN

I KNOW that i am waaaay up in the air, Far away from thinking about the bottom end..... hell we're still sub terminal... I know WHAT my sight view is SUPPOSED to be,,and i have learned that "ya' never Know what's gonna happen":o

FUN??? sure is...
And when the exit comes off slick and as planned!!!! it's super fun.
Cause that sets the tone... and then i hope it follows through for the rest of the dive....
BUT,,,"ya never know what might happen " ... and that Too... is fun...

safety first,, and what the hell??? safety second too...

edited to add....Fun is also... Reading many of skymamas posts, especially the One in this thread...!
Does the Lady Understand this sport?
or What!!??:ph34r:B|:)

Fun is what you enjoy (duh)...

I realized that the topic is maybe a little too broad, in that it first requires that we agree on the definition of fun, and then look at how different aspects of skydiving fits that definition. I think that for most people, fun is a subset of enjoyment. (Except for those who don't enjoy fun. Fuckem!) Dinner at a fancy restaurant can be enjoyable without being "fun".

I look back at my most fun dives as being the ones where I landed with a shit-eating grin on my face, and then cracked up as soon as we started the debrief.

At the time, the more challenging dives seemed more rewarding, but looking back, it's really the fun dives that stick in my mind.
I believe you have my stapler.

I will most definitely agree with that as a measure for how fun a jump was.
The debrief often will begin with a "What the hell happened?" :D:D:D

Yes, I was being facetious/sarcastic above... I pathetically find jumping alone and doing nothing to be fun. I am still terrified and thrilled on every jump!

Seriously folks, we're flying! That's fun no matter how you do it. B|

Doing a Mr. Bill with a rope linked to a cutaway system once your partner's canopy is good rappel down and have some fun with your friend throwing turns and swinging you around, but be sure that the cutaway system is well and good ;)

Never seen it done but seems like scary fun!

Fun is goin' center float and halfway through the dive realizing the guy across from you has your cutaway handle in HIS hand! :o

Oh, that was YOUR handle?:D

Your story reminds me of one I heard years back about a guy who would zero in on any newbie who looked real nervous in the plane. Before the guy exited he would lean into the newb and say "YOUR GONNA FUCKIN' DIE OUT THERE!" And then he'd laugh insanely, and then he was gone.

Nice, ehe?

Time and a place for everything...

One of the best compliments I ever got was from my college roommate when I put him out S/L in '79.

He said he couldn't believe how professional I was, no jokes, no games no fuckin' around...:):$

unlaunched exits - fun
launching pieces - less fun

I love the last diver/ super swooper slot on a big-way - but a decent-sized linked launch is a close second. Pulling off the perfect 8-way exit time after time is still a buzz for me.

Zoo dives - can be a lot of fun if you can get past the fact that it's a zoo dive... many who consider themselves to be "fun jumpers" take things way to seriously, and conduct their skydiving activities as though they were training for hard-core competition.

Zoo dives can be fun once in a while, but I get tired of them pretty quickly if they keep happening. I know some people who don't care at all whether a dive goes 'well', but I don't really get that. Being serious about making a dive work, or training with a team, needn't be a fun killer - you just have to approach it positively. :)
