Landing updraft

Recommended Posts

I was coming in for what appeared to be a normal landing. Winds were around 10 gusting to 15. Did my normal 1/2 flare. Than got lifted about 10-15 ft. I kept (never released) and finished my flare. Landing was still hard.

Questions:
I thought the lift was caused by a gust. But could it have been casued by to earlier of a flare?

Was it right to hold and finish my flare or was there another option?

It could have been any one of a number of things, so it's impossible to tell just from your description.

The key thing in flaring is to understand that each time you flare there will probably be slightly different conditions and you'll have slightly different reaction times. Try to be as consistent as possible, yet with that understanding things will be different.

So what does that mean? It means you have to be prepared to adapt on a moment by moment basis to what the canopy is doing.

If you've applied a bit too much input too early, you may balloon up. That doesn't mean hold that amount of input and it also doesn't mean take out all the input either. Just a small correction can save that landing if applied appropriately and in a timely manner.

But seriously, that's an experience thing.

Ain't nobody ever gonna be able to tell you how to really fix that other than to tell you to be smooth.
