Cut Away Mal...is hook knife usefull?

I,ve read about some main cutaway situations where only one side is released, with potential risk on entanglement with reserve.
What can you do in such situation before pulling silver??,, Is it possilbe to use a hook knife for so many lines?
If not a good idea,,,, WHAT should you do?

Cut through the risers, only two of them.

You can strike the hung riser from behind on the 3 ring assembly to try to help it release...sometimes the webbing around the 3 rings, especially if not maintained properly, can become stiff and not allow them to release.

Using a knife is a possibility, but it's not an easy task, and you don't want to spend the rest of your life trying to cut lines while you should be finishing your emergency procedures.

Talk with your instructors, get their input, and take any information you get from dz.com with a grain of salt...the people here have widely varying degrees of experience and/or expertise and do not know you or your specific situations nearly as well as your instructors should.

This is typically from not pulling the cutaway far enough.

Much better, I think, to focus on completing the pull, even if you have to go back for it/re-find it rather than using a knife.

i agree. also, if your main is only attached by one side, it will not fly, and you will be heading down at a fast rate... you won't have much time to try to pull out your hook knife and start cutting.

OK, so you decided to pull the reserve with the main still attached by one riser.

Now that your reserve has managed to open without entangling with the main, do you cutaway the stuck main riser, presuming you already tried pulling the handle again and it's still stuck, reel in the main and stuff it between you legs, or just continue to just let it flap around behind you as attempt to land?

I had some work done to my rig that resulted in my cutaway cable getting trimmed too short on the non-RSL side. My DZO saw that the cable was popping out of its keeper pocket every time I jumped, and mentioned to me among other things that it's a particularly nasty mal when one riser disconnects during deployment. I can imagine the same would apply to only one riser disconnecting during a cutaway, leaving half the canopy catching air and the other half wildly flapping around.

I first saw this video a while ago. It looks like the jumper clears the reluctant riser after the reserve is deployed.

One thing about that video is that it makes it scary obvious how an entanglement can get started. With the main spining like that, all it has to do is catch the reserves bridle and twist it up with it. Maybe that's why the reserve has a free bag instead of a D-bag. So, even if the bridle gets intangled the reserve still has a chance to slip free and fully deploy.

I'm going to make it a point, when I practice cutting away, to clear the cable
