Jumping without things

Recommended Posts

Did my 1st few barefoot jumps over the weekend, and now I have jumped without most of the accessories that skydivers normally wear, including all the items listed in the poll.

I really like the no-helmet no-goggles H&P. I guess I just like feeling the wind on my face. I didn't like the riser hit I got during one of those style jumps though, so it is a trade-off.

Anyone else like a more minimalist type of jump?
It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".

I can't feel my hands with gloves- so I don't wear em. I didn't wear eye protection until I hit 10 second delays(SL progression). And well shoes- sometimes I like to freak people out with my long toes. Yes. I included a pic from this weekend for your viewing pleasure.
I woke up next to a blowup doll Ash....so what do you think?

Jumped with just a rig a few times. (No AAD even.) I think it's important to be able to skydive without gadgets.

I think the gadgets, like the altimeter and goggles are there for a reason and are good to have. I don't think it's important to have jumped without them. Even if you THINK you can eyeball the altitude, the altimeter is better at it, and goggles really makes you see better in freefall.

I have a couple of naked jumps, though, but being the sissy that I am, I wore shoes. And I forgot my helmet on a big jump once, I was preoccupied with how to get my O2 hose where I wanted it, and they wouldn't stop the 3 planes taxing out just because one jumper forgot her helmet. :D

Naked skydives are fun: you'll be surprised at how slippery it feels, you have nothing to fly on, but the old techniques still work. Dives work, stops work, and soft docking work. You KNOW that you're a true RW geek when you laugh more at the extreme body positions than at all the stuff flapping about. I had my feet up at my BOC, of course weightbelts count as clothes.

:)

I forgot the "without an AAD" option! I did that for the 1st time too this year when the Cypres went in for service.

One benefit of intentionally skydiving without things is it increases confidence. If you do later get in a "oh shit I forgot my..." moment, at least it won't be anything new. (unless it is a rig).

that's because you are tight :$

Good to know!

:D

Still, naked skydiving makes hardly anyone look good. A good arch and the rig makes even a thin butt look fat, flapping genitalia are not pretty, and the air makes especially the front of the thighs look odd. And all the flailing because it feels slippery and inputs doesn't work so well.

I think it's very important to be ABLE to jumo without them. Yes, altimeters are great tools - but you have to be able to judge altitude by eye, because altimeters can break. Goggles keep the wind out of your eyes, but you can forget them, they can get blood on them or you can lose them in freefall - and then you have to be able to skydive without them.

That's not to say that regularly jumping without an altimeter is a good idea. But if someone is unsure, doing a jump without one is a good way to prove to themselves that they can do it.

One thing I would recommend adding to that, if a newer jumper is not comfortable with the idea, is a 2-way where the younger jumper is not wearing an alti, so they can work on getting a feel for things, but still have a friend there in case the eyeball and internal timing don't work, possibly a coach/AFF instructor than knows they can be there and relative.

/run on sentence ftw.

But being able to jump without them isn't the same as having jumped without them. Knowing the breakoff altitude and counting seconds in the track means that the jumper will be able to jump with a malfunctioning altimeter. I hadn't practiced jumping a 50-way with no full face or audible, but I had no problem doing it.

It's about knowing how to do it, not deliberately leaving behind important tools, IMHO.
