The Glory

Just wanted to see who all has experienced "The Glory" ?
+1
Common or no?

If you mean the circle of light 180° opposite of the sun and surrounding your shadow and kind of looks like a halo as you're about to punch a cloud . . . yes.

How common is it? Depends on how often you punch a cloud with the sun at your back.

Ok, technically you don't have to punch a cloud to see it, but the sun does have to be behind you and casting a shadow on a cloud and punching one almost guarantees that during the daytime.

For example;

Aw hell...I didn't know that's called "The Glory."
Wingsuiters see this *all* the time. It's part of the rush. We don't need to punch clouds to see it, we just fly over em'. :)
It's worth flying to Zhills, Elsinore, or Hawaii just to see this on a regular basis (in a wingsuit).
Thanks for "enlightening" me, Paul

Well, we also have to be open to the possibility he's talking about something completely different.

What that may be though, I have no idea.

You just go right on wishin', big guy.

I think I prefer the term "Halo." Everyone knows wingsuiters are angels. :):D

I was jumping at Titusville in 1993 and was doing an Iron Cross jump with a local.

We were faced off for a few moments when he starts shaking his head around with his tongue hanging out, a huge smile on, and pointing down. I looked and there it was - we were falling into a circular rainbow.

It was amazing while it lasted, which seemed a long time. One of the coolest things I've seen.

Until that moment it never occured to me that a rainbow should be circular.

And I'm still angry at the gay community for taking the rainbow. >:(

Doesn't even have to be a cloud. Dew on grass will give a glory; often see it early in the morning when flying.

That rainbow ring is one of my favorite natural special effects. Since the puffy sunlit cloud surfaces that produce them attract wingsuits like kids to candy, we get them often. I video em every chance I get.

I call them Sun Dogs.B| Saw a few this year as I punched some industrial haze.:)

"Sun Dog" is the name of a different phenomenon and you'd have to be facing the Sun rather than looking at your own shadow.

They are created by light refracted through ice particles in the upper atmosphere and appear 22° predominately to each side of, but sometimes extending completely around, the Sun.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog

BTW, this also happens with the light of the Moon. A traditional bad omen in many cultures.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to sky illusions.

Super geek here:

The position of the intensity maximum in the halo depends on the temperature at which the ice particles formed. The crystals can be flat platelets or long columns, both hexagonal in shape, which take up different orientations. Since they behave like mini-prisms, the direction of the refraction maximum depends on the statistical distribution of their orientations and hence of their shapes. Flat platelets tend to form Sun dogs (maxima on each side of the Sun). Columnar crystals tend to form maxima above and below the sun, and reflections from their surfaces produce vertical pillars of light.

D_squared just showed me this other thread last night and I was sure that THAT was what you were asking about... I guess I was wrong... lol:S:S:S

If you disbelieve everything because we cannot certainly know all things, we shall do much-what as wisely as he would not use his legs, but sit still and perish because he had no wings to fly.-JL
