flyingmontana 1 #1 July 2, 2010 I'm working toward my A license, and last weekend, on my 15th skydive, I went through an ice cloud early in the morning, leaving me with a bruised and swollen lower lip. Today I jumped again and the weather was clear and beautiful, but all the way through freefall I felt like those knives were cutting into my lip again, and now it's even more swollen than before, and bluish/purple. It doesn't hurt much now, but I'm wondering if there's any way I can protect it while skydiving this weekend? There's no face mask helmet available at my DZ. My coaches say they haven't seen this before. It looks like one of them punched me in the face for tracking wrong. Any suggestions? Thanks...

flyingmontana 1 #5 July 2, 2010 Yeah, I'm very sure I'm not biting my lip. I was relaxed and smiling at my coach, while thinking, "I wonder why this is hurting so much!"

rhanold 0 #9 July 3, 2010 The mystery was solved and it was a unsecured end to the chin strap of her helmet. Just to be clear... the jump with the ice was not through a cloud, there was ice for the first thousand feet or so.

LadyDoc 0 #11 July 3, 2010 ok, REAL LadyDoc this time. Perhaps you could invest in a neoprene face mask. bikers where them a lot during the cooler season. If I can figure out posting links, I'll get one on here for ya. here's a good one, scroll down a bit and look at the neoprene ones. I don't know how it works with skydiving, but it works for biking.... :) http://www.bikermask.comIf you disbelieve everything because we cannot certainly know all things, we shall do much-what as wisely as he would not use his legs, but sit still and perish because he had no wings to fly.-JL

So how about a full face helmet? especially good in the winter Thanatos340(on landing rounds)-- Landing procedure: Hand all the way up, Feet and Knees Together and PLF soon as you get bitch slapped by a planet. flyingmontana 1 #13 July 3, 2010 I owe my instructor, who posted above, big time for figuring out that it was my chin strap causing the recurring abuse. Everything's much more comfortable in the air now! I doubt I'll need a full face helmet after all, although that did seem like a good idea.

InfiniteSky 0 #17 July 4, 2010 I've used a neoprene facemask while skydiving and it worked great for me. A neck warmer works too, although wind cuts through it unlike the neoprene. It's a good way to keep your face warm if you don't have a full-face in the winter.

skyflower_bloom 0 #19 July 4, 2010 there is a product that coats canker sores to prevent them from being in pain eating. the idea is a protective barrier. cankex or something? it's clear in color, and either a stick or more typically a little brush /wand. i'd give the usual disclaimer to ask a doc, but this could be a good option. however, that depends if it's open/cut, or bruised, in a way that exposes a layer of skin-- such product might help more then, than if it is simply just swelling, in which case it might simply be the pressure and elevation change hurting it, and you may be better off with something anti-inflammatory/painkiller (i.e. ibuprofen?) or if too bad, take a few days off and ice it to help it along? again, not a medical expert.. ask a doc and your instructor.. just have a fat lip of my own and a bit of experience with canker sores. hope you feel better, blue skies!! robyn"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
