I've collected $500 plus shipping costs on projection lenses USPS managed to loose somewhere between here and Europe. Took about two months of waiting and a couple of phone calls.

You got off easy!
The last time I received parachute parts via FEDEX or UPS, they charged $45 in brokerage fees!
One of them charged over $90 and "lost" an entire tandem rig for three weeks! The sad thing was that I was not even buying the tandem rig, because it was a "loner" for a rigging course! Needless to say, the tandem rig cleared customs AFTER the course concluded!!!!
And they wonder why I bad-mouth courier companies??????
