cha2e 0 #77 December 24, 2009 Thanks for the support virgin-burner and everyone else promoting http://SkyTu.be! I thought I'd wander over and chime in on some recent progress with the website. There's been a lot happening at http://SkyTu.be the past few months. With strong growth every month, we burned through a little over 200gb of bandwidth last month alone, it's clear we're doing something right. Some of you may have noticed the previous site upgrade affected some site functionality. We've fixed all the rough edges and are happy to announce everything is online, fast, and working great! Check out the new site design! http://SkyTu.be There were a few suggestive remarks from friends using the site mentioning the occasional quality loss when uploading a video, common with video sharing sites. During the process of converting the avi/mov/mpg/etc file you're uploading to FLV (flash video) the video is recompressed and usually a bit on the conservative side for sake of bandwidth. This would result in slightly granular video every once in a while but it saves a ton of bandwidth consumption overall. Well, the bandwidth happy guy I am, I've decided the extra quality is worth it. All newly uploaded videos will be re-encoded at a higher quality setting than before, and I may be bumping it up again, or offering HD in the short future. Also, just throwing this out there to see what you guys think. As I've said since day one, this is pretty much what you guys want to see it be. I have the resources to make it happen, so why not? I'm debating setting up a file manager section like SkyDivingMovies had for people that want raw file storage for their original skydiving videos. Free accounts on the file storage would be capped at a reasonable amount of disk space. As some of you mentioned, possibly a small "premium member" subscription for larger quotas. Interested in helping out? Get ahold of me! contact@skytu.be Be sure to check out the new re-design and recent improvements! http://SkyTu.be Happy Holidays! - Chase

cbkyro 0 #81 March 24, 2010 -Sigh- This gets really old. The site has been down for ages now and I don't understand why Dave and/or whomever is relentless on letting anyone assist. Space and funds is NOT the problem. The only think I can see remaining is the time not wanting to be put into it. He said he backed up the old movies long ago and that was about the last we heard. What can we do to move this along? I have offered my services and it's only costing me only the price of registering the domain. Which Craig already has. I have a fast host, unlimited space and bandwidth. I think we would all like to see the old template the site used. That was more attractive to me than all the flash based now days but that's just my side. Please let us or someone know...blue skyz cbkyro http://www.FuelYourEdge.com
cha2e 0 #82 March 24, 2010 I'd have to agree. I'm debating setting up http://skydivingmovies.net/ with the same format as the old .com (more file storage oriented than streaming-video based). I've mentioned this in the past as an addition for http://SkyTu.be but people didn't seem too excited about donating towards operating expenses. I have plenty of server and network resources to make it happen, but this economy is tough. A site of that size and traffic requires more than a value hosting "Unlimited" plan for 10 bucks a month, unfortunately. For a file storage site, you need at least a mid-range VPS or entry level dedicated machine, possibly more depending on a variety of factors. So, should I just setup the file storage site with different levels of free and paid membership? If we can all agree that this is something that is needed, I'll pony up the time and servers to get it all setup on the .net
cbkyro 0 #83 March 25, 2010 I'm aware it would be something larger than just a "value hosting 'Unlimited' plan for 10 bucks a month". I would attach it as part of my current plan and all I need pay is for the domain. But if we want a dedicated line such as Virtual Private Server, we're getting into bigger bucks which is still a possibility to get a discount on through me. IE. 50% cheaper is doable. I just want the same ole friggin website back that I got on at school and work.blue skyz cbkyro http://www.FuelYourEdge.com
d123 1 #84 March 27, 2010 I've really liked the old format of www.skydivingmovies.com. If someone wants to make a site exactly like the old one (simple, clear, focused on material and not so much on the cool interface) please do it because I'm searching for one like that Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls! tdog 0 #85 March 31, 2010 Quote I have a fast host, unlimited space and bandwidth. Who? How much? I might need them... Dave posted once how much bandwidth was required... It was a lot. More than I could host on my network! Every hosting plan I know that has "unlimited" bandwidth manages this "unlimited" by making the pipe too small for any hosting site of videos... So users will take days to download videos when 20 are downloading at the same time! P.S. Please tell Youtube where they can get unlimited bandwidth... I hear Google is losing a crap load on youtube bandwidth right now, they have not been able to make the video hosting business cheap to operate, so they might want some of your bandwidth, espcially since their bandwidth bill is in the millions of space-bucks per month. cbkyro 0 #86 April 2, 2010 The company I use for my websites is http://www.hostmonster.com/track/cbkyro. You should get an excellent rate through my affiliate link ^ I wouldn't use this if I were hosting a filed based video site. For that, I have another larger scale provider I would go through. HostMonster has the best support you can find. They are based in the US out of Utah and I've never had an issue they couldn't resolve right away. Not to mention free domain for life and free 'whos' security. Can't beat em!blue skyz cbkyro http://www.FuelYourEdge.com
melfalcon 0 #87 April 13, 2010 Im willing to make and fund a site if i can get exactly what it is that people want. I have a nice little script in mind - that will pretty much make the site videos only - with category options etc. I just need to know you - the potential users want it! Do you want it for uploaded videos only, or should youtube be allowed to be added aswell? I have several servers - so hosting / bandwith will not be an issue. I did JustSkydivers.com as that is the type of site i wanted to see available. However i can certainly see the benfit of a videos only site. Let me have a general consensus of what is required - and give me 7 days to knock it together.www.justskydivers.com - Drop into the online DZ! www.justskydivingmovies.com

LouDiamond 1 #89 April 25, 2010 I would suggest you add all the disciplines as separate categories. ie: CRW, Wingsuiting, Freefly/VRW, RW, Freestyle, etc Allow registered people to upload and download videos once they sign in. Linking to YouTube or other videos could create dead links when that service deletes a video so I suggest all content be on your own servers."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
melfalcon 0 #90 April 25, 2010 Registered users can upload videos - there is also a download option - but the videos only appear to be available in flv format - however these can be played on a pc or many phones etc. There is the option for embed code etc. As for categories - Only categories with a video uploaded actually show. Current categories are:- crw dropzone specific fooling around formation skydiving freefly pilots / flying skydiving accidents student jumps - Sub categories of raps and aff skydiving compilations wingsuiting freestyle Funny All content is on the site - linking from youtube isnt an option on this one - however linking from youtube is available on my other site - JustSkydivers.com If anyone thinks additional categories are required - just let me know and i'll add them.www.justskydivers.com - Drop into the online DZ! www.justskydivingmovies.com
