Still amazes me that the ones that use the DZs gear, don't pay for pack jobs, not respondsible if mains get lost after cutaways, don't have to do debriefs or edits make the most money

And when was the last time you heard of someone taking a TI course not getting it.

Video guys -- have the most at risk, the costliest gear and if you break it down, they really make the least, followed by the AFFI's

So go on and tell me how hard it is to do tandems - not that i care

At my DZ

TI $30
Video $43 --- digital stills, and video - edit your own
AFFI $33
Coach $10
Tandem pack $10
Student pack $6
Fun jumper/ staff pack $5 plus tip unless your a tight wad

Video and AFF have to pay for packjobs and reserve repacks on their multiple rigs -- and if you have a cutaway and lose your main or wear your gear out - its on you to replace it

2007 rates:

TI - $40 (plus $1 per lb over 190 lbs)
Video - $25 (+$15/edit, +$35/stills)
AFF-I - $35
IAD-I - $5
Coach - $6
Tandem pack - $10
Student pack - $5
Experienced pack - between packer & jumper

I'm considering a couple changes for 2008, but they're unlikely to be anything real drastic.

I don't edit, provide tapes, DVDs or CDs, and I make more per jump than anyone else on the DZ.

On top of it all, I don't have to be responsible for anyone but myself, and I get to jump my choice of gear, which I have complete control over the maintenence of, and happens to contain a kick ass Velocity.

Tandems are where the DZ makes the most money, pretty easy to understand really. I quit doing tandems a few years ago because it was damn hard work, not to mention the most dangerous job at the DZ. As for video guys, it seems that as soon as someone can afford a couple cameras...poof, he's a video guy. AFFI's at my DZ get $35 a jump, which I think is more than fair. I believe the vidiots make about the same.

You forgot to mention that the TI has responsibility over the passangers life who most likely pukes on the TI´s suit under canopy.

Plus..

I do think its a lot more fun to freefly with a tandem plus swoop your own main canopy, rather than buttslide with the bigass tandemcanopy.. (we do this for fun anyways am I right ?)

If you arent satisfied with the sallary, try tandemmastering.

But if money is what you are after.. Maby seek work at some other area..

If that is true, then your TI's need to re-evaluate what they do in freefall and under parachute. I have 2300+ tandems and have had about 6-7 pukers...

Not like the good ol' days where I supplied all of the gear and made far less than what the video concession did!!!:S I guess that is why it is good to be in the DZO's back pocket!:D I always wondered why I quit doing video's back in the day! It's all good....

PS DON'T forget to get the walk out shot or we will fire you!

This is why I am an AFF instructor, as the Was (Not Was) song goes:

I was transfered to the moon
Worse pay, better fellow workers

I built our love out of blood
I went to the dentist and told him "take out my heart"
I feel better than James Brown
I feel better now
I feel better than James Brown
I was attending Mardi Gras with Fidel Castro
Bucksome cross dressers threw fake gold coins at our feet
As we discussed the fate of the revolution...

Seriously - if I wanted to make money, I would haul meat. But I do AFF for the love of the sport and students.

>. . . make the most money.

Supply and demand. AFF and video are more fun than tandems, and thus people are willing to do them for less. You can bet that if all tandem students suddenly became cute 80 lb japanese women, and video and AFF were required to jump staff rigs with 230 square foot canopies in them (so they stop complaining about using their own gear) the pay scale would change pretty rapidly.

I'll take two please:)

Agreed!
I told the boss - a long time ago - that I will cheerfully haul 80 pound Japanese girls two-at-a-time.
He only has to provide an airplane with a huge door and I still expect to get paid for EVERY tandem student I haul.

Curious that in 2010 STI would reduce it's tandem rates to $32.

Why are they less?

...................................................................

DZOs are always whining ... like farmers.
When weather is good, they whine about low crop prices. But when weather is bad, they whine about the weather.
DZOs will always find excuses to reduce pay for instructors.
It is up to professional skydivers to hold the line on pay and working conditions.

If Joe reduced the pay for tandem masters I would suspect it is because he has the supply to do so. Tough times in southern Ontario probably mean more part timers indicating they want to work more this year. It has nothing to do with "fair" (whatever that is) and more to do with supply and demand.

I had been under the impression that even though Joe is known for his 'fiscal frugality', he did pay equal or higher than average for staff pay.
_______________________________________________

Not surprising you thought that, I guess, that IS what he tells everyone....

From a quick, very unscientific poll I conducted with some friends recently, I'd say Joe pays on the low end of average. Several places are paying more.

Rather than having more part-timers,

Last year Joe brought in a couple of Russian tandemmasters for the season, who live right at the dz and do most of the jumps during the week. We have been told that this year he is bringing in more, and one of the trailers has been made over into a bunkhouse for them.

Partly the reduction in pay was said to be because the Russians couldn't train their own students (English not the first language), but were getting paid the same. So whoever trained them supposedly will now get the $3 per student for the training. However, what it means is you show up at the dz, they push someone at you, say she's been trained, and you get less money for taking them up.
If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead.

Ya I don't like the fact that these people were brought in that have such poor command of english. That being said there will be an issue on bad weather days when the tandem students are trained and then they come back at a later date. They will require retraining but the instructor will only receive $32. This to me is completely unfair.

Well the only good thing is that there are lots of other DZ in Ontario that compensate their staff fairly.
