Droping like a rock

Recommended Posts

I'm one pack job and 1 check out jump away from my A :)The problem is a fall like a sack of rocks[:/] I was actually told that I may have some trouble finding people to jump with.
I would like some suggestion on slowing my fall rate. After being constantly drillied about relaxing and arching, I find it difficult to both physically and mentally de-arching. I know the make yourself wide/big and hug the tree.

The right jumpsuit will help in addition to technique. I've jumped with people whose regular fall rate was much higher than mine, yet on the particular jump they stayed with me the whole time.

dress for success, start shopping for a jumpsuit that will aid you in not cracking the sound barrier ;)

flattening out will help.

good luck - and keep at it.

Get a big suit, go to the tunnel and tell the coach you want to learn to fly slow.

Very, very good point. Technique works wonders as well. I can do things at my size (5'8", 240#) that amaze me now, that I couldn't do at 100 jumps that allow me to slow down. i.e., being more relaxed and aware of my body position, flattening out in a way that gives me a good fall rate and still allows me to move where I need to.

But a good suit for your build and some coaching will work wonders that you didn't think were possible.

Don't give up, this sport has a place in it for anvils like us, too.;)

Don't just get a big suit! Get a suit that is designed for the speed you want/need. Many suit manufacturers give you options for fast, slow and average fall plus add-ons like gatorz, paneled bootie fronts, etc.

The right suit will make all the difference in the world.

Blue skies,

Get a jumpsuit with heavy material to slow your fall rate, work on a comfortable arch If you focus so much on slowing down hugging the ball that you are unstable, or cannot turn, drive or have fun it sucks. Keep jumping it is a good way to keep you motivated to loose weight,

Hey, I'm that guy...a nickle plated safe with rounded corners screaming towards earth (while trying to get back up to the formation).

Dress for success, I've talked a few times about all the options I had in my BevSuit to help me achieve a "normal" fall rate. Got some coaching too, and now I'm in the formation (usually) instead of spending 7,000ft trying to get back up to only see it break and everyone track away.

You can search for my posts or feel free to PM me and I'll help a fellow fast falling jumper out.:)

Large skydivers have big challenges just as the small peeps have. It's those average sized skydivers that piss me off. They have no idea what it's like to be a big guy or a small girl and trying to match fall rates with others. But there are two ways to overcome these issues. The easiest method (and recommended for you right now) is to dress for success. If you're a big person, wear a baggy jumpsuit. If you're a small person wear a jumpsuit with little drag. And in time, your skill and experience will be elevated and you WILL learn how to fly your body in order to slow down or speed up. But that takes time and patience. So dress for success and wear the appropriate jumpsuit for your body type.

Like everyone has said, Jumpsuit. Of all the gear and things you can and do buy to skydive with, a jumpsuit will affect the way you fly more than any of the rest of your gear.

Except your main;)

2 Superman32:
Have the same troble =/ but already bought a slinky jumpsuit so at almost all my formation jumps I had 2 options: be formation's torpedo or just say em "see ya-a-a....." =/

Whoever told you you will have a hard time finding people to jump with because of fallrate should be beaten. ;)

I sunk out of nearly every dive I went on for my first 50 with my team. It takes time to really learn the nuances of slowing down. But with practice, you can get it. One of my teammates wanted me to wear a T-Shirt or get a baggy suit, but the LO of my DZ said to get something that would let me "fly my body, not my suit." So that is what I did. Now I can control much better because I had to learn to do it myself and not rely on a suit

You really don't want to have to fly in a de-arched position all the time. It is very hard to do much if you are constantly "hugging the tree". As was said, suit manufacturers have plenty of options to help with fall rate if it truly becomes a long standing issue.
Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

The exact same gig here as well and it seems that we are almost at the same spot in jumps. My last jump was for nothing but fall rate control. A friend jumped with me and varied his fall rate (he had to sitfly to catch me at first) and then tucked and made me fall harder to catch him then he spread and he made me float back up to him. I know what it "feels" like now to try to vary the fall rate, and having someone coach me was the only way to really see it in action. He didnt even make me pick up his ticket.. but I did offer! ;) and it was a WAY cool jump.

Superman, what’s your height and weight? How much of that is fat and how much is lean muscle? Be honest. I know a few skydivers that are just plain overweight and fall far too fast to do much except to jump with a small group of other very fast fallers. I’m talking 150 MPH on their bellies! An appropriate jumpsuit will help quite a bit, a different form will help too. However, if you are overweight loosing weight is the ultimate key. Ten or 20 pounds goes a long way to slowing a person down.

If you’re one of those big, heavy but lean guys then you don’t have many options other than a jumpsuit and changing your form. The problem there is that using a max slow fall rate is impractical for a full jump every jump. In this case you may just need to learn to jump with other fast fallers.

Congratulations on your “A” BTW!!!!!

I used to have similar problems when I started to learn FS, since I am built quite heavily with broad shoudlers. If I ever went low i was gone becasue I was already at my slowest fall rate. A good jumpsuit and lots of practice later I now have a full range of between around 102-150mph on my belly. Enough to jump with everyone, especially my little warp students.

Keep at it dude, you will always find people to jump with and sooner rather than later you will learn those tricks which let you jump with anyone no matter what their fall rate. Tunnel time, letting the coach know you want to work on slow fall definatly helps ;) (I have over 10 hours of tunnel time)

edit: cant type to save my l1f3

RW suits make a big difference. I used to fall slow, and so arched like a mofo to keep up with the big guys (and just... even with weights). I got a tighter RW suit, and now fall too fast.... Have to learn now to flatten out more and not fold in half...

You can get bits of webbing sown into the armpits of RW suits to help slow you down a little if it's a real problem.

Try jumping with someone that falls at an "average" speed and spend the entire jump keeping your face in theirs without them doing anything. Then get a feel for the position your in.
